I asked for one at 30weeks because I didn't want to go half my pregnancy without seeing her! My doter OK'ed it as a "fun" ultrasound. Surprisingly it was cheaper than all my other scheduled ultrasounds!!

Do you want the NT scan? If you do you should ask for it.

@mrsjyw: I didn't have the NT testing either. You can always ASK for a u/s but they may not say yes.
I had one at 7w (they thought I was 10w--didn't believe my chart)
another at 11w (the "standard" 10w one)
another at 21 w (anatomy scan)
another at 27 w (car accident--actually don't really remember seeing it,, but DH does)
and no others. So--I got 4, but I guess most at my clinic only get 2.

@mrsjyw: I think most doctors default to not doing it if you're not high risk.

@MamaMoose: i was actually really confused about this, because my dr just ordered two blood tests (1 at 10 wks) and I will hve another at my 14 wk appt. but no scan for genetic screening.

Just FYI if you want an NT scan you won't be able to do it at your 14w appt, you would have to call now. I learned this week that there is a very small window when they can do it and it has to be between 11 and 13 weeks.

Can you request an NT scan? I had one around 12-13 weeks.

If they are not planning on doing more than the a/s, then that is probably good news that everything seems to be going well with your pregnancy. I thought the a/s would be my last one but due to persistent spotting it looks like I'll be getting them periodically throughout the rest of the pregnancy. Honestly, I'd prefer not to have the the ultrasounds if it meant I wasn't spotting!

I've had 2, one at 9 weeks & one at 18 1/2 weeks due to a car accident. I'll have my A/S at 19 1/2 weeks.

I had to pay for the 9 week one because only the A/S was included in our normal care package. My doctor will only do them if they feel it is medically necessary or you have a legit concern and you have to pay out of pocket for that.

You'll have to pay out of pocket. Im like an ultrasound hoarder at this point. I will have had four by the end of my first trimester!!! 8 weeks for dating and vitality, 10 weeks due to cramping 11 week due to bleeding, and then my NT scan coming up at 12 weeks. I had to spend over an hour on the phone with my insurance yesterday to make sure the NT scan was covered since I'm young and not high risk for genetic abnormalities but luckily it is.

You can always ask but it will probably depend upon your doctor (and you may have to pay out of pocket). Last pregnancy I had 4 (8w, 20w, 28w biophysical profile b/c I wasn't feeling much movement, 36w for size); however my doc doesn't have an u/s machine in office so I have to go to the hospital. This time I expect to just have 3 (7w, 19w, around 36w for size).

I think the short answer is yes, you can ask. I had one unplanned one around 16 weeks....I was a nervous nilly b/c of a prior miscarriage. I lifted a box that was too heavy, felt something pull, and was convinced I did something bad. So I went in to the doc and she actually offered one (I thought she was just going to do a HB check).

At this point (almost 38w), have had seven....6.5 weeks (offered b/c of prior loss), 10w (standard in my OB office), 12w (NT scan), 16w (due to freak out), 19w (anatomy scan), 30w (when went into pre-term labor), 32w (follow up from pre-term labor). Crazy!

Are you not going in for an NT scan? I think that one is done up to 13 weeks and is one of the elective u/s that insurance might cover.

My dr always made excuses for me to get more (if I wanted them) so that insurance would pay, otherwise uneccessary ones were out of pocket.

Lol we've had 8, because it's twins, and it looks like we'll have two more. Any slight risk is more than offset by the med benefit of knowing they're both doing ok in there.

Yay for free maternity care, though:) what do elective u/s cost you guys anyway?

My doctor will only do additional ultrasounds for medical reasons, not because you just want more.

(But, the few times I've had a medical concern, I gotten the OK for an additional ultrasound without any sort of push back....she wouldn't do one at 16 weeks because I wanted a new pic to give the grandparents at Christmas!) ;-p

I asked and my doctor gave me one. I have terrible health insurance, so I have to pay out of pocket for basically everything until I hit my very high deductible, so I have to pay for every ultrasound. But when I asked for it, it was the first time the baby looked like a baby and it was jumping and moving around! So, it was worth it to me.

Hm my doc does ultrasounds at every visit...or do you mean like a high tech one? I would think most doctors offices have the equipment to do an ultrasound if necessary, so I would think they could do it if you asked!

I think they would count as elective ultrasounds so you'd have to pay.

BUT I have gone for pain and worrying about leaking fluid and I got ultrasounds both times! So basically if the OB has a reason to worry they might send you for an ultrasound. So I've had two extra ones.... score!

I had one transvag u/s at 6 wks... heard heartbeat at 10 wks, go in for our next appt at 14 wks... and likely get our a/s done at the 18 wk appt...

I'm not high-risk, but can I request an u/s at my 14 w appt? I was so early on at 6 wks, that even the dr said that our edd could change; but we haven't had an u/s since...
