I now live in the suburbs of a medium-sized city, and can still see the constellations just fine, but if I want to do some serious observing, I bring my telescopes further outside the city. Every time I am close to or south of the equator I have a plan for what constellations, globular clusters, and nebulae I will be looking for, none of which can be seen in Canada. It often involves me getting up in the middle of the night, whether on vacation or travelling for business. I grew up in the South Pacific and looking at the night sky was a beloved past-time. I lived in Austin, TX after university and it was hard to see much, thanks tithe light pollution. Now we live on the CT coast and have lots of clear night skies. Love it! My favorite part of the job was looking up at the fading night sky, and seeing all of the constellations. I was really into Greek myths growing up, so it was fun to see all the stories in the stars. My favorite was Orion the Hunter, although sometimes he would dip below the horizon and disappear for a while.</p> <p>After moving around a bit, I settled in NYC for 16 years or so - where there's a lot of light pollution, and so I rarely saw any stars. But where I just moved, you can see each and every constellation at night, even Orion the Hunter! Maybe this is where he would go when he wasn't in the Virginia night sky...</p> <p>I definitely want my kids to get to know the constellations, and appreciate the night sky. So far though, I don't think they've ever seen the stars - at least, outside of online videos and TV shows!</p> <p>Can you see the stars at night where you live? </p>
