When DS1 was an infant I started work at 6am so I was long gone when he woke up. DH somehow got him to play in the pack n play next to our bed so he could catch some extra of sleep (we didn't co sleep, he was in his own room overnight) so like some PPs even if he gets up early he has learned to quietly entertain himself, normally until after 7am :)

Some children will let you tinker with their sleep schedule, and some just won't. My toddler went through an early waking period, but as she's aged, she's settled into a late to sleep, fairly late to rise schedule. But she only sleeps about 9 hours. And nothing in the world will change that.

There are so many things you need to consider to troubleshoot WHY he's waking so early. When is his bedtime? How many naps does he take? How long are his naps? How much awake time does he have throughout the day?

If only it were as simple as just leaving him and he would learn to sleep until our chosen time!!

Since you co-bed, what do you do when he wakes so early?

Sorry to tell you this, but all kids (and people) are different, and some just naturally wake early no matter what. Our 21 month old has woken between 5 and 6 AM for her entire life, no matter when we put her down at night.

Prior to the time change DS would sleep until 8AM unless we woke him up. Since the time change he regularly gets up at 6 which isn't a problem during the week because that is when I start getting him ready to leave but it is killing me on the weekends. And since he and DD share a room, he wakes her up.

Like some PP, we also co-bed and I also treat any wake up before 7:30 or 8 as a night waking. I nurse him when he wakes up then and that last chunk of sleep is actually one of his best/deepest-I think he really needs it.

ETA-I should add that he doesn't go to sleep until 9 or 10 at night. He's 7 months old.

From 8-9.5 months R was waking up at 5 -530 verses her normal 6-630 (usually the late). We left her in the crib till 6 and wouldn't get her before then, unless she started crying hysterically. It was rough. It made the morning worse for me trying to get ready while I knew she was up and I would watch her on the monitor praying she would go back to sleep. She would fall asleep at 645 on the ride to day care. We tried earlier and later bedtime, but nothing worked. Finally over Christmas she started sleeping later. Now she is back to sleeping 7-630. Consistent bedtime helps I think.

Not sure how to do it when you co sleep.

I found that my sons problem was light. So we put up black out shades and he has been sleeping until at least 7 (I want him to sleep until 8).

The other issue, is that he is peeing out of his diapers and as soon as that happens, we are screwed. I knew it before it happened yesterday because he got ansy pantsy. So if we get up and let him pee he does better.

My LO used to wake at 4:30 - 5:30. As she got older I decided 6 am was the earliest she "could" wake up. So if she got up earlier I would go and feed her and soothe her but not "get her up". Eventually, she got the message. now she is 13 months and she's been sleeping 7 - 7 or 7 - 6:30 since about 10 months.

In my experience, no. My son is an early riser and always has been. Until about 12 months, he usually woke up between 5-6. Now at almost 16 months, he's up between 6-7.

Treating it as a night waking didn't work because he was clearly awake and ready for the day.

We co-bed and I treat any wake-up before 7 like a night wake up too. She finally pushed the clock back to 7 from 5. She's 6 months. She did have a phase at 4 months where she was waking up at 3 am for the day, and nothing was working, so I started putting a play gym in bed with us so she could entertain herself and then went back to sleep. Not stellar parenting, but I got enough shut-eye to want to live again!

We went through that for about 6 months. I even posted on here that there needed to be a 6am Gymboree because I was so tired of the early morning isolation. Initially LO wouldn't come in our bed at all but at about 6 months she started laying with us and nursing from 4:00 - 5:00. Sometimes she would fall back asleep

This past week, 10 months, I stopped the middle of the night 3/4am feed. Oddly enough she started sleeping through until 6:30 -- later than she had slept with a middle of the night feed. I don't believe we've seen the last of the early morning wakeups but I'm encouraged.

Omg I was about to post this same thing. Haha. G is killing me with her 5am wakeups.

@Grace: I've started to do this. We feed her, then bring her into bed with us and she usually will sleep another 30mins. I think we may start doing what @loveisstrange: said.. she doesn't wake up pissed, just super awake.

Oh man, we're dealing with this too. I've been doing what PP's have said, treating any wakeups prior to 7am like a night wakeup. Putting him back in his crib. Sometimes he'll really fuss and cry, but he always falls back asleep, even if it's just for an hour or so. I'm hoping that over time this will morph into him sleeping until 7am.

My DD went through a phase where she woke up between 4-5 every night and I would nurse her and she falls back asleep next to me until closer to 7. Actually, it's not a phase...she's one and still does that now, but the time of night varies!

I don't know if you can now, but I told my LO that morning doesn't start until 8. So I would treat any wakeup before then like a night-waking. But she's only 4 months and I've been doing that from the start.

In my opinion, yes.

C woke up early for a while. What we did is left her for a bit before getting her in the morning. Say she woke up at 7, I would leave her until 7:30 before getting her (she was always quite happy to wait and didn't cry). Eventually, we got to a point that unless she was crying, she didn't get out of bed until 8am. It just sort of naturally followed that she started sleeping until 8am. Now, she sleeps TOO late and I have to wake her up in the morning. lol

Please say yes :(

LO was up and ready to go at 430 am today :( unfortunately this is not unusual! He wakes up anywhere from 430-530 am. I need him to sleep in until 6am! Then I could actually get ready for work and not be a hot mess. Any suggestions? We co bed and he is almost 9 months.
