@Skadi: Could you suggest coconut oil, if they feel like they have to put *something* on? That might be a little too 'hippy' though, haha.

@looch: @MenagerieMama: Our relationship is a little tense. Grandma thinks all of our alternative choices are super weird and that I try to micromanage her. So I try not to sweat the little things!

@Mrs. Tiger: Haha, that's what they do too! I'm relieved that I was just being a crunchball. It's not naturrrrrral. (Except it is...it's a natural mineral, after all!)

@Cole: @blackbird: Thanks so much for explaining! That makes me feel a lot better.

Zinc oxide is totally safe! It's in a TON of skincare products (sunscreen!) it's a mineral actually, and has been extensively researched and is very mild. It forms a barrier, so it doesn't penetrate skin, so it's not being absorbed at all.

I think desitin is just an old school sort of diaper cream (lord knows my mom sweeeears by it and can't believe I don't use it! THE HORROR) but i find it thick and pasty and prefer to only use it if E has a diaper rash in a disposable. Otherwise i'm like, meh, why bother. That being said, I would have no problem asking my in laws to use another diaper cream (one that I gave them) because it is super pasty and sticky and water repellant, so i feel like i have to, well, scrub E's vagina to get it all off her in the tub.

I asked the pediatrician and the pharmacist about this when a little one I watched was going through an awful spell with diaper rash. We were using calmoseptine which actually has more zinc oxide than desitin. Happily the answer was there is absolutely no risk! It's just a barrier cream and skin won't absorb it in the same way as lotions and other types of cream, which isn't too day they won't absorb some but it's not like using a tub of Vaseline every day or something like that.

We cloth diaper, so the only diaper ointment we use is the Grovia Magic Stick or Burt's Bees Natural Baby Ointment. I know you can technically use zinc oxide with CD (or any ointment that doesn't have petro products), but it does tend to stain so we avoid it.

When we take LO over to the grandparents, they put her in disposable diapers and slather in extra strength Desitin. I mean, it's not just a thin coating...they put it all over, super thick. Every single time they change her diaper. I haven't said anything, because I figure I'm probably just being paranoid, but I have this feeling like it's not good to put something so chemically strong on a baby's bum when she doesn't have even mild diaper rash. I can't help but wince when I change her diaper afterwards and I have to meticulously wipe Desitin out of her vagina.

Am I being an irrational hippy?
