The marshmallow test has a lot of flaws...and I thought it was more about how your child is that correlates with some findings, not teaching them to be a certain way?

@honeybear: I haven't had a chance to dig into it yet... I heard this book may have some exercises, but haven't confirmed yet!

Yes, as far as not eating candy immediately goes, he's a pro. (I'm not sure that's a perfect measure, but I suppose it's the basic litmus test because of the marshmallow test, right?) Anyway, he got a lollipop at a store and told the cashier that 'This is for after lunch!' without any prompting. Lunch was a couple hours away and he didn't mention the lollipop again until lunch was done.

@mrbee: I'm curious about the workbook. Tell us more about it, please!

Yes! Surprisingly? haha

We give him one gummy vitamin a day and he will slowly eat little bits of it off. To the point where I have to say, PLEASE EAT IT.

Keep us posted on your success! Our LO is only a year old, so it's probably too early for us to do much at this stage (she still mostly doesn't understand English, after all). But from the beginning we always changed her diaper before feeding her...in the morning, after naps, etc. Sometimes she'll fuss and make the sign for "more" on the changing table, but we never give in. She knows we aren't going to skip or hurry through a diaper change just because she's impatient. She has to wait, and she deals with it fine 90% of the time. A very small step in the right direction, but it's been hard for us to brainstorm other ways to teach her patience at this young of an age.

No, my son can't wait. If you try to tell him one now or two later, he chooses one now.

Absolutely not. I mean, she's only 18 months, but...no. She's a 10 blueberries in the mouth-kinda girl.

One can, and one can't. We give the kids four little gummi vitamins every morning: one kid eats them one at a time, and the other puts all four in their mouth at once!

Working on teaching delayed gratification... from what we've been reading, it's really important! But it's kind of hard to teach. I found a workbook on it, so we'll start there and see how it goes!
