Haha DS1 says five-teen! He can count to 20 without skipping numbers if he goes slow. He rushes a lot though and ends up skipping some and mixing some up.

@mrbee: I never knew it was that common!

But yes, we've been working on it for a long time. He can count to 50...but skips 15!

My son skips 13.

It is interesting because in German, his second language, 11 and 12 are similar to English, but 13 is like three ten, as is 15.

This is a kindergarten skill in the state I teach in...counting to 20 orally without skipping. I see/hear 16 get skipped often. Kind of weird! First grade is numbers 1-99. Most kinder can get past 20 by the end of the year without skipping.

She used to skip random numbers but at 24 months she can now consistently count to 20...she can sometimes count to 30...half the time she gets to 29 and then says "twenty-ten" instead of thirty

The words 11 and 12 are unique unlike other languages where there is a pattern starting at 11.

Then when kids have to read the numbers 13 to 19 they have to do the opposite of what we teach them with reading any number 20+. We drill reading left to right in math and in reading, but those darn teen number have to be looked at backwards.

Charlie's pre-K teacher said that a lot of kids skip the number 15. She said the reason is that you say it "fif-teen" instead of "five-teen." So kids don't relate it to the number five... unlike say "four-teen" or "six-teen."

It's a great theory, although it doesn't really explain how most kids don't have trouble with "eleven," "twelve" or "thirteen"!
