We are starting lessons next month. She is 4. We can only take her once a week due to our schedules. So I am guessing it is going to take a while. We are figuring we will do weekly lessons all winter as well, so hopefully by next summer she will be good.

DD1 took lessons at 2.5 and it was really sticking until she had a bad experience with an instructor and totally regressed. She's now 4.5 and loves to be in the water but doesn't have a lot of interest in learning to swim, she relies on floaties. She was able to swim across pool underwater and do a freestyle type stroke before her bad experience.

DD2 (19 months) is fearless and loves water so we need to get her in lessons. My parents have a pool and I really worry about her safety.

DS will be 5 next month and he's swimming on his own now (short distances). We've had him in swim lessons since he was an infant. He started swimming on his own in March this year while we were on vacation in Florida.

my 5 year old just started a few months ago, half hour lessons, $83 for a block of 5. there are usually 4 kids in her class run at a private swim school, very kind older female teachers with lots of patience. I'm going to keep going til the end of the year and then decide what to do as she starts school and the lessons will have to be after school.

DD1 goes to weekly small group lessons (3-4 kids in the class). She's 3, and has been going for almost a year. We started her at 2 because she had a huge fear of water. Now she loves swimming.

LO1 just turned 5 and takes a weekly half hour private lesson. We are able to buy them for $65 in groups of 5 from our Y. We live in an area with lots of water and have a pool ourselves we use between.

LO2 we will start in the fall when she is 2.

Our older learned right around 4. He was doing lessons and swam in our pool every day that summer. At that point he could swim the short length of the pool. Now at 5 he can swim the whole length.

GRoup lessons once a year. We started as a baby in Family classes. LO plateaued when she was swimming but no breath just around turning 4 so we waited about a year until coordination kicked in. She was very comfortable in water and surfed at 5 with life vest. On her own, she could swim as far and as long as she wanted with treading and a bit of doggie paddle/breathing up. Now at nearly 6 1/2 she passed a camp swim test and we are working on stroke development. She is finally in a class to learn to breathe on side. I didn't learn to swim beyond doggie paddle until I was an adult and then took off with life guarding, triathlon, scuba and all.
The best to progress is to take swimming lessons and free swim throughout the week before next lesson on your own. I think two week sessions are too short. They need more time with their teacher.

We started group swim lessons in march and go weekly.

My 2 year old is in Mommy and Me classes and can't swim at all, just has a ton of fun. He is fine with water on his face and loves to get dunked or blow bubbles.

My 3.5 year old has made a ton of progress. She didn't use to like getting water in her eyes or ears and now she has no problem sticking her head in the water. She can swim from the instructor to the wall or vice versa. She's can also back float.

The only problem is she can't take a breath and this week she tried to swim across the corner of the pool and I had to jump in after her. Class was over and the teacher had put her on the wall and turned her back and she had just gone for it. So scary.

No. She hated swim and hates water on her face. She never swims without us and we aren't regular swimmers so it's not a huge safety thing for us, plus I didn't learn til about five or so either, and not through official swim lessons.

My DD is 4 and in semi private (2 kids) swim lessons. We started the summer with 8 one day a week classes. It seemed like she only got back to where she was last summer, moving from someone to the edge of the pool. So I signed her up for two weeks of M-Thurs. We're one week in and her moves are a lot more like actual swimming. I'm hoping that one more week and then a bunch of swimming this summer will make it stick.

I've had the same question. We didn't start until this year at 5 since she didn't seem ready and she made amazing progress but I'm afraid she'll lose it. We also did 2 weeks group lessons.

If so, how did they learn? Private lessons, group lessons? How often?
My 4 year old is taking swim lessons AGAIN this year but it seems to be sticking this time. He is actually swimming to the edge of the pool from the instructor. I wonder if we should continue to take lessons after this 2 week session is up...
