DS got this analog watch that's a slap bracelet when we were on vacation. He loves that thing and it's like a big joke that every time we ask him what time it is, he says 7:30. He's only 3.5 though. But he likes wearing for the sake of wearing it, not because he cares what time it is.

My 4.5 year old daughter can for the most part. Definitely not a regular clock though. She has caught on because I always would say when the clock says x y z we're going to ____, and she just caught on. But it's still sort of general for her because until they can really subtract from the next hour up I think it's still hard for them to gauge time. But she could tell you what time it is, and she knows, for example, that at 4:27 it's almost 4:30, etc.

@looch: And BTW, I'm all about sticking with digital clocks in the house if it will help my 5 year old be more successful at knowing what time it is. My sole motivation for her telling time is that she doesn't come into my room to pester me before a certain time in the AM, haha.

@Boopers: @looch: @MamaG: Sorry, didn't mean to scare anyone! I guess I should have phrased my question to indicate that I was asking more about INTEREST or beginning to work on the skill. Definitely not mastery of it! :) I actually can remember telling time being kind of a hard thing for me as a kid - I totally wouldn't expect the recipient of this gift to really use the watch as a timepiece....looking at it just got me thinking (and wondering if parents of a six year old would be like "WTF" about a watch for a kid of that age. Skills aside, the gift was more about the character/accessory factor, IMO. :)

@MamaG: It's okay, I just hadn't even thought about it and to be honest, it isn't a huge deal, but we don't really "work" on it at all. We have an analog clock in our playroom, but I don't think he ever looks at it!

@looch: Sorry, I should have emphasized that she really is just starting to learn. She is by no means fully capable of analog time reading. But I also feel like not having an analog clock in our house isn't helpful :(

@Boopers: Phew, I really hadn't paid attention to it at all, and he only knows because we have an excellent book about time and dates at home that we read regularly.

@looch: I teach first grade and our state standards have students telling time to the hour and half hour in first grade. Don't stress!

ETA: Apparently our 2nd grade standards are telling time to the minute, but your son has a few more years to master that!

Gosh, my son can only tell time on the hour and half hour and he just finished kindergarten.

He has a smartwatch that has both digital and analog "faces" maybe that's an option?

@MamaG: Thanks! He's going into K, so this could be a "gift to grow" with out it being a huge stretch, I think. We don't have an analog clock either, now that I think of it!

She started to learn right at the end of Kindergarten. We do not have an analog clock anywhere in our house! We need to buy one so she can work on the skill.

Can your little one tell time/read an analog watch? If so, at what age did they learn?

Looking at a character watch as a bday present for a 6 year old boy - the digital ones all get terrible reviews; the analog ones are much better, but I'm not sure if it's silly to get a watch he can't read. FWIW, someone bought my 3-year old an analog watch b/c it featured an animal she likes, and I didn't find it weird.
