@tinyperson: aw, boo. They were so cute! They had only been out in the exhibit for a few months when wet saw them. My DD got a panda stuffed animal at the zoo because of them and it has now become her lovey that she can't sleep without!

Just realized that I was giving kid-friendly recommendations. lol, oops.

I still really loved the Toronto islands, biking around would be so fun. The ferry ride is beautiful. If you've never been to Niagara, I'd highly reccomend it! They have a new double zip line ride and the behind the falls tour would be totally cool. There's fireworks tours every weekend in the summer I believe. My in laws did a dinner tour and loved it. There's also some wineries in the area and Niagara on the lake that I wish we could've gone to.

Here's the thread about the East coast: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/prince-edward-island-and-surrounding-area-with-kids

I can't help with the East coast but if you were planning a week's vacation within driving distance from Toronto I would rent a car and head east - stop in Prince Edward County for the night, get a great meal and stay in a nice boutique hotel. The next day do some wineries/cheese tasting/go to the ice cream place that makes apple pie ice cream (they make homemade vanilla and then stir homemade apple pies in!). Leave late afternoon and drive to Ottawa. Stay that night, spend the next day wandering around the city, maybe hit the Museum of Civilization or the Art Gallery. Depending on when you go in June they may have the light show on Parliament Hill. The next day either head out or, if you want, go white water rafting on the Ottawa river. Then go to Quebec City and spend the rest of your visit there.

Also I'm not sure how adventurous you want to be, but you could do the CN Tower EdgeWalk, if that fits your bill. Also maybe the day before you head east you could do Niagara Falls for the day.

I haven't been to the east coast since I was a kid so I can't help with specific ideas out there but if you don't mind the plane ride it's a great idea.

Also agree there's lots to see and do in Toronto. I think the toronto fringe festival (grassroots theatre) is in June usually. For other drivable things I can think of
-niagara falls (falls, wineries, helicopter tour??)
-algonquin park (big provincial park with hiking, canoeing etc. There's a "couples resort" in the park for nice accomodations)
-prince edward county (wineries and a nice beach but it might not be hot enough for real beach weather)
-kingston and the 1000 islands (kingston has a historical fort and nice waterfront)
- the scenery around Georgian bay is nice but not sure what there is to do
-ottawa has parliament, and some good museums as well as nearby gatineau park

Have fun!

Last year in June we took a trip with DH's family to Niagara Falls and Toronto with two 2yo and a 1 yo. Toronto was really fun and the highlights were the Toronto islands, the zoo (baby pandas, squee!), and the kids really loved the streetcars lol. The royal Ontario museum was super cool too. I wish we could've explored more in the "adult" areas for myself, but the kids part was really neat.

Niagara Falls was beautiful. My DD loved the butterfly conservatory there and all the grass to run around by the falls walkway.

Eta: I know you said you wanted to travel outside the immediate area but maybe you could do some of these things while you're there. :)

There was a really good thread a few weeks ago about the East coast - I'm on my phone but if somebody hasn't pointed you to it by the time I get home I'll track it down. From Toronto you'd be looking at a fairly short (2 hours ish) flight, but then you'd need a car.

Otherwise I'd recommend doing some exploring of Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal/Quebec City - that would give you plenty to do in a week.

I have to go to Toronto for a work conference in June of next year--I'd like to take another week or so after the trip to travel around. Neither DH or I have ever been to Canada, and so we're having trouble narrowing stuff down.

We're open to flying or renting a car and driving. We like to make sure we do at least one cultural thing and one adventurous thing, plus relaxing and eating good food.

Would prefer to stay east, as we live in the western US and have spent a lot of times in the mountains here. Looking for some different scenery :)

Still a ways to go for the trip, which is why I'd love any (and all!) suggestions.
