Thanks everyone, good to know!! I definitely will be buying our car seat in Canada - Ill pay more for peace of mind and also I'm a crazy rule follower! But stroller I'm thinking of buying across the border since the exact same model is sold in Canada and I have no safety concerns.

Crib I'm still on the fence with but will likely err on the side of caution and give up on my Jenny Lind dream!

@Arden: If you have US drivers license or license plate of course they wouldn't ticket you, but if you are clearly a Canadian citizen with a Canadian vehicle you need to comply with Canadian transportation laws.

@MsMini: What if you are an American just visiting Canada? Like going to Niagara Falls, or if I drove to visit my sister at school in BC?
Seems crazy if I wouldn't be able to drive up in my own car with my own car seat for a visit...

@shopaholic: If the car seat doesn't have the Canadian safety sticker on it and you get pulled over you could be fined.

Hmmm... I don't have experience in this, but I imagine if you get the stroller and carseat in the U.S., just take them out of the packaging like you are already using it? i.e. car seat installed, stroller in a travel bag or nothing at all maybe?

I would double check on warranty and safety compliances though.

I haven't bought anything major from the states. Just clothing, an ergo, baby wash etc. im planning on buying a breast pump too, but not other gear. I think the warranty issue would be a pain in the butt.

My parents brought our crib over from the states and had a miserable time at the border. Despite the fact that the crib is sold in Canada, and is certified to Canadian standards, the guards almost didn't let them cross because the warnings and instructions didn't have a French translation. Somehow with a lot of begging they were allowed to cross but had to promise that we'd call and have the crib safety inspected.
We got our UBV and Tripp Trapp in the states and brought them back without problem.
I've heard of child protective services being called when traffic stops find non-Canadian car seats, so we bought that here.

It's shocking how much cheaper stuff is back home :(

I was warned that for many items you can only complete warranty claims in the country where it was purchased, so if you have an issue with something your warranty could be useless.

A border guard actually told me that it's illegal (I feel like that's such a strong word!) to buy a crib that isn't sold in Canada. I wouldn't be that worried about not meeting the safety standards, but I would be worried about having it confiscated in you're driving it across the border.

I've bought tons of US gear and brought it to Canada no problem. I didn't do the carseat because I just wasn't comfortable with that, but everything else should be fine, even the crib.

Okay - some things are just sooooo much cheaper across the border - like the Uppababy Vista (over 100$!!) I checked with border services and it *seems* like it would be no problem to buy it there and bring it across.

I know car seats & walkers are a huge no-no, but have you brought any other gear across the border? Did you have any problems?

On a somewhat related note, what do you think of bringing cribs across the border? I am in love with the Jenny Lind, but it's no where to be found in Canada any more - I would have to go to Maine to buy it.

I checked with a supplier from BC who used to sell it and was told it no longer complies with the new Canadian Safety Standards. I know so many parents have used the Jenny Lind with no problems but part of me doesn't feel comfortable using it anymore as I would just feel awful if something *did* happen and I knew the crib didn't meet CSA standards. Or is that crazy lady of me?
