@Lindsay05: yes that's too bad. If you plan on having more children I'd sign up though. Are you taking a full year off with this child? You'd catch the last 5 months of your mat leave if you signed up today. Some things to consider I guess!

@Lindsay05: it was as of 2010 that you could sign up and I signed up right away. I knew I would want maternity benefits eventually. You do have to pay in for a year before you can collect. I just filled out a form online to opt into EI for self employed individuals. It costs me about 800$ a year on top of my taxes, but I can collect 25,000$ if I took the full 50 weeks of mat leave, which I am not.

It seems to me that it was a lot easier for me to receive my EI than you all, but likely because I didn't have to wait around for an employer to submit a ROE.

I will say that I called Service Canada to ask a question about my application and didn't have any trouble getting through (other than a 15 minute wait time on the phone).

Service canada is terrible but so are most federal programs! The entire year I tried to call them and was NEVER able to get through.

@delight: not to thread jack, but what did you have to do to receive self employed benefits? I tried reading on their website and it says you have to apply 12 months prior to your leave to receive this?

"When will I know if I am eligible to receive EI maternity or parental benefits?

If you are eligible to receive EI benefits, you should receive your first payment within 28 days of the date we receive your application and all required documents."

I filed mine July 19, and its still processing, as well. I think it takes awhile for your ROE to get there (whether you or your employer submit it).
Hadn't heard about the 28 day processing period though! Yikes - I hope its a little quicker than that!

they say they take 28 days to process your claim, plus the 2 week waiting period.

the 28 days is back-paid though.

@ALV91711: @oliviaoblivia: Thank you!! I can see online that my ROE was submitted by my employer so hopefully it's just a normal processing delay. I'll give it a month then try calling again, but glad to know it's all normal and it will be back paid!

You will get back paid. You don't get paid for the two week waiting period.

Mine got delayed because my HR department never sent in my ROE, but I didn't know this right away. I found this out as they gave me a message on my service Canada account online.

I would double check that everything got submitted correctly.

It really sucks having to wait and not knowing why.

Mine took two months to work out because my boss filled out a form incorrectly. I ended up getting paid for that time in one lump. I ended up calling even though the website said not to, the person on the phone wanted to know why I waited so long to call. Because they told me not to! If I were you I'd just keep calling. In the end the phone reps were really helpful.

@char54: I have to do reports because I fall under the self employed category. Yours might be taking longer because your school board had to send in your record of employment. Good luck! I am confident you'll get back pay.

@delight: Awesome, thanks! I went into a Service Canada location to fill it out and they told me I didn't need to do the reports since it was a mat leave claim...

I tried calling this morning and they said they weren't taking calls due the high call volume...very helpful!! Lol.

You should get back pay starting after the two week Grace period. I filled my online app out in June and started receiving right away after the two weeks. However, I did go online and fill out the reporting record. You might have opted out of that though. Double check and make sure you don't need to submit that. As soon as I submitted that, I received my first pay the next day. For a lot of my friends it took a few weeks to get their EI, but they were always back paid. Usually your first deposit is for a one week period and your next are for two weeks. Hope you get it soon. Just call if you're concerned!

So I filed my EI /Mat leave claim July 15th...the 2 week waiting period should technically be over and I should have started receiving benefits this week. When I check online though at Service Canada it says my application is still processing.

Should I be concerned that it's taking so long or is that normal? Do they backpay to the date my application was filed (plus 2 week waiting period), or will my year only start once it's processed? Just trying to figure it all out since I'm a teacher and my union has recommend that my work benefits (6 weeks paid) start only next summer so as not to coincide with my EI benefits.
