that sounds pretty normal and i would bet you would be hard pressed to find individual coverage for you that would cover maternity. last i looked, it was over $450 per month and that would still be with some sort of deductible. You should look around and compare the overall costs and what your final bill would be.

in our company, you can cancel at any time, but you can only enroll at open enrollment or life event.

I actually just got a medical bill for the physical therapist I saw in March. I was like umm I paid my $50 copay so what gives? Have to meet your deductible! Oh. I didn't know what that meant until now. It's very common to have a deductible. $5000 is pretty high, ours is I think (just asked DH) is $500. So, once we meet $500 we don't get the medical bills (we just got married & on same ins so shouldn't take long to meet that.) And our monthly ins bill is $112. Call and see if you can get your deductible reduced. It may/may not increase/decrease your monthly bills.

$5,000 is a pretty high deductible--close to what my parents have, and they have private insurance. But a deductible is very common, though. I don't actually have one for my plan, but I know my husband does! I hope you find something that works for you!

If you qualify for another plan and can enroll on it, you should be able to drop your husband's plan at any time by submitting a letter of coverage from your new insurance to your husband's provider. It might be different with individual plans, though; you might have to call around and see what other insurance providers can do for you.

Otherwise, most insurance companies have either quarterly or annual enrollment periods when you may be able to unenroll. You'd need to talk to your husband's HR person to find out.

@blackbird: maybe i've just been spoiled by great individual plans, but i've never even heard of this. the only thing i've ever had to pay outright towards the deductible without help from insurance was ER or hospital bills.

@MamaMoose: we have a $5000 deductible, and definitely do not have $5000 lying around. i've always been on anthem, and NEVER had to pay out of pocket for a doctor's appointment or test. my medical bills have always been extremely reasonable... until today when i opened a bill for $1250 just for some blood work.

Actually this sounds totally normal to me. You usually pay 100% out of pocket until the deductible is met. Can you not get insurance through your job? if you're looking for private insurance, it's very, very expensive

@tororojo: well, we had an individual plan through anthem before he got this job, and it was MUCH better (and actually cheaper!). he's actually still covered by his mom's amazing government insurance since he's only 24, so i would just need to find a plan for myself. i've been looking, but it's all so overwhelming to me. i don't really understand insurance. :(

A lot of plans don't cover anything until the dedutible is met... That's not unusual. My plan works like that. But we have a low out of pocket maximum so while medical expenses can be high at the beginning of a plan year it's still an amazing plan. And switching now doesn't seem like a great idea because you would have to start a fresh deductible on a new plan. If you really want to switch I'm not sure about a loop hole. At my work the only way to make changes outside of the open enrollment period is if you have a major life event (marriage, divorce, spouse loses their job, etc).

Umm I think that to get out of his employer insurance, you would need to have what they consider a qualifying life event. Like a loss of job, new birth, something like that. He would probably have to call HR to find out for sure. I have had individual insurance plans before and they're generally not very good--have you found any online that would be better than your current one? They used to not cover maternity, but from what I understand, Obamacare has changed that...still though, it's worth double checking because it seems like there are always exceptions that result in us getting screwed! You could look into AFLAC, but I don't think you could get covered for a pregnancy that's already existing.

so, we're on a really awful insurance plan through my husband's job. during his training we were told how amazing the insurance was, and how it was a great benefit program. FALSE. today i found out (after getting bombarded with medical bills) that the insurance LITERALLY covers nothing until the deductible is met. this means we will have to pay for every appointment, ultrasound, test, lab, etc. on top of the $200+ we're paying every month out of his paychecks. i'm pissed.

now, i'm trying to figure a way to get out of this insurance plan. i'm not even sure if someone will want to take on a pregnant woman, but i'm determined to look for something.

does anyone know any loopholes or possible ways to get off of a group insurance plan before open enrollment? also, do you think i'd actually be able to get an individual plan while pregnant?
