We did the azul beach a few weeks ago and it was VERY family friendly with our 16 month old. They have a kiddie pool, toys, cribs, an indoor play area, and nannies for the evenings. Almost everybody had little kids at this resort! My only recommendation is to upgrade your room. The basic room was very basic and small. It was super close to the airport-we made one stop to another hotel then went to ours.

We stayed at the RIU Cancun when I graduated from college. It was all-inclusive and very nice with multiple pools and nice rooms. I didn't have a LO then, but I remember every day they did some kid/family games and activities at one of the pools. My favorite part was the fresh guacamole they had all the time. Mmmm, so good!

My parents own timeshares that can also be rented out by a company called Royal Resorts. In Cancun they have five resorts called The royal Myan, the royal Caribbean, the royal islander and the royal sands (never been to the 5th older called club international). They also have a resort in playa called the royal hasciendas. They are very clean friendly and family friendly resorts. The best part is when you get the full villa you have the option of two bedrooms, living area and kitchen so makes things flexible to eat in with your toddler if you want to.

@illumina: We stayed at an all-inclusive resort called the Villa del Palmar in Cancun. http://www.villapalmarcancun.com

We got an amazing deal off Living Social (and go through ebates for 6% cash back), so I would check there to see if there are any cancun deals, and do some research/read reviews online to see if the place is any good. Have fun!! Cancun was way more amazing than I ever expected because I had it in my mind that it was going to be party central, but my experience was far from the typical MTV spring break stuff they normally portray it as.

Eta: wow, I'm looking at the site, and even their regular prices don't seem too bad - their 2 bedroom suite is $266/night - http://www.villapalmarcancun.com/Two-Bedroom-Suite-Villa-Palmar-Cancun.html... and this is the all-inclusive price too, so that means all meals are covered. We didn't pay any meals out of pocket while we were there!

You can read my review and see more pics here - http://www.hellobee.com/2013/06/21/destination-cancun-mexico/

I would recommend the Azul hotels - Azul Beach is much smaller, more of a boutique type of feel. Azul Sensatori is a larger resort offering more restaurants and more room types to choose from. Both are very family-friendly, known for amazing food, very good service. Either is about 20-25 min from the Cancun Airport, not a far transfer at all. Definitely recommend upgrading your transfers to private, non-stop, so you don't have to stop at other hotels along the way to drop off other travelers.

Playa del Carmen is just as much of a party zone as Cancun inmy opinion. I would go to Coco Tulum, in Tulum, about 2 hours from Cancun by ADO bus directly from the airport. Soooo much nicer than Cancun or Playa, Coco is a beautiful kid friendly hotel

@illumina: We stayed at the Excellence Playa Mujeres in Cancun. It's amazing but would only work if you weren't taking your lo since it's an adults only resort.

@illumina: maybe 45 mins to an hour, depending on traffic? Definitely hire a private transfer (about $110 round trip) so you don't have to make any stops along the way. We've always used USA Transfers.

@illumina: no advice for Cancun, but Playacar has lots of family friendly resorts and smaller hotels (or condos, if you'd rather) and you can easily walk into Playa del Carmen, which is also family friendly. We've been going to Playa del Carmen every year since 2009 - we love it there!

We've been to Cancun/Mayan three times. We got marries at the azul sesatori last year which was the closest to the airport, by far the nicest of the three we've stayed at. Food was great price wasnt too steep for a week and they allow kids. We also stayed at the Valentin resort which was really nice but I can't remember if it was adults only. We stayed at the grand sirenis which was the cheapest of the three but it was the furthest from the airport (I believe about 1-1.5 hours). Have fun I'm so jealous! I'm 8 weeks pregnant and we just purchased a new home so no vacations for us anytime soon!

I loooove Playa Del Carmen. We went on a long trip to that area and stayed at a resort in Tulum, a botique hotel in Playa and a oceanfront hotel in Cancun. It depends if you want to do all inclusive or just pick out the hotel and find food on your own, both has it's perks. We are headed to Now Jade Riveria to shoot a wedding/our 8 year anniversary in October. It's between Cancun and Playa. We got a smokin deal through bookit.com Usually I would not stay in a self contained resort the whole time, but since I have my camera gear/am expecting I'd rather just do it the safest and easiest way possible.

Depending on how our first family holiday with LO, to Spain, goes next month we are considering going somewhere tropical to escape the Winter in February next year. I know lots of Bees have been to Cancun, so thought I'd see if anyone has any hotel recs.

I would prefer the Playacar/Playa Del Carmen area, but as it's a 10hr flight from the U.K. I want as short a transfer from the airport as possible!

Hopefully Cancun won't be too party central for us! Also, are there trips/places to go nearby suitable for a 18 month old?
