I do remember being told to watch for any wrappers that were opened or had obvious holes when I was kid. I'll probably do a quick check on D's candy, but nothing too crazy. A local urgent care center is actually offering free candy x-rays if you want to bring your kids' candy in!

Checking over candy totally used to be a big thing when I was a kid! I let DS pick 2 candies tonight when we got home, and gave them a cursory look over.

Honestly, if I was to inject something into a candy bar with an insulin needle I guarantee that short of a bright light and a magnifying glass, you wouldn't be able to tell it had been tampered with, and I doubt anyone is looking over the candy THAT closely!

That being said, I did go through his candy tonight and gave each piece a quick glance, but I think candy tampering is really not something to be concerned with in the grand scheme of things.

I think this used to be more of a thing. They would talk about it when I was in school and I was the type of kid that was all, "Mom. Remember to check my candy. I can't eat anything unwrapped!" And she was like, "Oh, yeah, right, lemme see... you're good."

Honestly I'm not worried about it.

Nah, not yet. She only went to 12 houses and they are all our immediate neighbours. I trust them. And I have to open all her candy for her anyways, so I'll be able to tell if it's open. When she's going to more houses and has a bigger stash, I'll check them over.

We went through DD's and took out things we didn't want her to have, like Skittles and lollipops, gum balls and hard chews. When she's older I will probably just check there is nothing unwrapped in there then let her have whatever.

i thought about this tonight because i remember when i was a kid, it was such a big thing. Before eating any, we had to go through each and every one and check that they were wrapped properly. And the horror stories people would tell each about what could happen was enough to make us kids follow the safety checking rule! I totally forgot about it until i realized LO was eating his first treat tonight and it wasn't "checked". But now i think it must have been a little dramatized back then when i was a kid. Now that i've remembered, i will probably at least glance at his candies before letting him eat them.....and maybe start teaching next year. But i won't make it such a big scary deal like from when i was a kid.

@regberadaisy: my parents inspected our candy for safety purposes. When I was old enough I did it too. I think my parents also did it so they could get dibs on their favorites- Reese's and Peanut Chews.

I also think it's a good way to have your kid slooow down a bit and unwind after trick or treating.

This isn't a major concern for me, and I ToT'ed in the 80's and early 90's, when this was actually a "thing" parents did. My kiddo is two and won't have free reign over her candy consumption for a few more years, anyway.

Not to be disrespectful, but I kind of feel like Halloween is becoming so watered down and safety-centered. Like, we used to bring dim flashlights along, and now kids are blinding the streets with football stadium lights strapped to their foreheads. Of course, I don't want to put my child in any conceivable danger, but a neighborhood witch potentially poisoning candy is kind of spooky!

Okay, okay, I'm not entirely serious. But, no, I'm not worried, and will simply teach her to practice good judgement and caution, as she grows.
