@banana: oh ... i lied, haha!! If I don't want her to have something, I say that I need scissors to open it and we need to do that at home. She's accepted that so far. And then eventually she'll put it down somewhere, get distracted, and I throw it away!

@andrea: Wow, how did you sneak it away? If my son knew it was something yummy, he would have to eat it right then and there! My husband grew up with no candies/chocolates at home and he has no interest in that kind of stuff as an adult whereas my mom was a lot more lenient and I developed a bad sweet tooth as an adult. :(

@banana: oh they will be addicted! We took DD to the Halloween parade at DH's office and they gave each kid one mini-pack of M&Ms and the rest was small Halloween toys. For some reason, DD just knew that the M&Ms were something special and kept those in her hand the whole time. She kept begging me to open it but I eventually snuck it away from her and she forgot about it.

@andrea: Ditto! I feel like if anyone is going to give my kids candy for the first time, it should be me! My son hasn't had candy yet so I'd be upset if someone gave him a piece, who wasn't either my husband or me. We gave him a small piece of cupcake with no frosting a few weeks ago at my cousin's daughter's birthday party and he went ballistic for it. So I'm kinda worried about what'll happen when we introduce to him the world of candies and chocolates!

I would not be happy if daycare gave my daughter candy, especially since she has never had any candy before. I feel like I should be the first one to give her candy or at least they should get my permission beforehand.

Honestly I wouldn't care. It's Halloween. Maybe if it were just some random day I'd be a little annoyed. I don't see the harm in a treat every once in a while, and don't really think sugar is the devil. Of course, I don't have a toddler either so my opinion may change in a year or so.

Haha I am a bad mom!! Went to the Halloween party at Gymboree and they offered each kid one measly piece of candy. I was like, "where are the rest of the snacks??" My 22 month old was hoping there would be pizza. Poor kid.

@MamaBehr: yeah they don't even ALLOW candy in my old high school..... Halloween was about costumes, no candy allowed.
@HeatherlovesKenny: um....you're 100% right to feel weird about it. Who puts permanent marker on food? That doesn't sit well with me.....because kids like to lick the orange peels and all that jazz...very easy to get that stuff in your system. I am surprised, honestly, at the reasoning of some people haha...

Seriously?! Thats ridiculous!

We, unfortunately, mad to make an emergency trip to the pediatrician for both boys today and they offered them candy as we were leaving. Do people not understand how bad sugar is??

I attended our one year olds Halloween party today. No candy but each got half a cupcake. Some kids Arden even one yet. I had specifically asked for no juice and they poured her a glass. I didn't say anything bc I didn't want to be that mom but I don't want her to have juice yet.

@brownie: Ooh that will be so hard if my DD doesn't out grow her dairy intolerance! I always bring snacks that have two options (like string cheese and apple slices) so those who can't have dairy still have something to eat. A lot of parents at his school don't do that...

Side note: the girl's parents brought oranges along with the cupcakes so that was good. They had jack-o'-lantern faces on them, which was cute but they drew on them with permanent marker (the mom was telling us they her daughter got permanent marker all over her face from drawing on the oranges). All I could think of was the marker seeping through into the oranges! I'm such a worry wart.

My son got candy at his Halloween party (18 moths) but didn't get to open any of it until he got home. He won't get to eat any candy. Most of it was chocolate which has dairy in it. They also had cupcakes but they had dairy in them so he didn't get any. He gets sugar on special days but under my control.

Maybe it's a regional thing, because here it is totally normal for preschool parties to have tons of treats and candy. Southern suburbs aren't usually known for their attention to healthy living. :)

I agree that they should have notified parents first. I guess it all depends on the teachers and what their opinion is on candy for little kids. They probably didn't even think anything of it!

@autumnlove: I didn't see him eat any of it! But cupcakes have been so regular at his preschool that he acted like it was no big thing.

@photojane: I remember getting treats in school and being excited but I was around 6 or 7. I think at 3, parents still get a say in what their LO's eat.

As someone who doesn't have kids yet, I think it's hilarious to see little kids hopped up on sugar! My friend's 3-yr-old had a piece of cake the other night and provided entertainment for the whole room by bouncing off the walls.

BUT I can see being annoyed when it's nap time! There's a difference between parents choosing to give sweets and daycare doing it.

@Coco Bee: I watched a documentary on how horrible sugar is for the human body the other day and it was really eye opening!

@Nskillet: true, but if they were going to pass out candy, they should have told the children to wait to eat it until they could ask their parents, IMO.

Their weekly newsletters tell us "healthy snacks" but a lot of parents bring cupcakes for average days, blech. I'm left with tantrums and bad naps!!

@HeatherlovesKenny: bahahah stuff him up with veggies ;) lol When I eat a lot of sugar, I like to think that healthful drinks like coconut water flush it out of my system... I doubt it but it's a nice though ;)

I would be totally peeved!!! This is seriously a huge reservation of mine while considering sending DS to preschool! We don't eat any refined sugar AT ALL so I really think that DS won't respond well to it if/when he has it. Since cutting it out of my diet, my body has totally adapted and now I get REALLY sick when I eat it. I'd hate for that to happen to DS because I wasn't alerted.
