I have a Canon T2i with the kit lens and a 50mm f1.8 prime. I like them both and use them both all the time! The 50mm is my go-to for detail shots or portraits, but I like the kit lens when I'm on travel and doing nature shots because of the ability to zoom out to 18mm.

@MamaG: so hard to just pick one lens since I like different things about the ones I mentioned! The Tamron is nice because it gives a good range and opens up to 2.8 which is nice for low light and getting some depth of field. I bought that with the camera body, as I mentioned, so I'd be inclined to rec that first.

Also the 50mm 1.8 since it's so affordable compared to all other lenses. Great value and is so light and compact... I say, go for it now or soon after you buy the camera. Know that as a prime lens, you will have to move yourself with your feet to zoom in and out. I don't mind that though... I love the results with prime lenses so much.

I got the 50mm 1.4 about a year later I think since it was a little pricier (for me)... The difference between 1.8 and 1.4 is pretty noticeable, I think... It all depends on your budget... It could be something for your wish list later on. I always have something on my lens wish list! :)

@NYCaliMama: If I were to only get one lens to start, which would you recommend? And to a newbie, will I see enough of a difference in the two 50mm lenses? I had the f1.8 in my wishlist.

I have the canon rebel t3i and also bought it with the kit lens. The kit lens is nothing special. MIL has a 50mm prime I think and her photos look better than mine do. I really love the blurred background look so I want the 135mm f/2.0 L. I only take photos of my LO's so I'm not experienced but I read a lot of photography forums to pick up tips and my MIL is back in school for photography so occasionally I have her help. Oh, she also has the rebel t3i and loves it.

I have a Canon t2i... i didnt get the kit lens, but instead got the Tamron 28-75mm, 2.8. For prime lenses, I like the 50mm, 1.8... But I like the 50mm, 1.4 even more.

My go to is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Tamron-17-50mm-Aspherical-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000EXR0SI/
Not a Canon, but it's half the price of the Canon equivalent (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EF-S-17-55mm-Lens-Cameras/dp/B000EW8074/)

Lots of people like the 50mm 1.8 for about $100, too.

I'm seriously considering purchasing a DSLR - the Canon Rebel t3i. I read a review that suggested purchasing just the camera (rather than a kit) and then purchasing a 50mm lens. In the lens reviews I've read, both versions of the 50mm lens are very highly reviewed. If you shoot a Canon DSLR, what is your go to everyday lens?
