@Espion: @Pepper: gotcha! In that case I would pump every 2-3 hours to keep your supply up, and eat lots of oatmeal! Do you have a good pump? Maybe consider renting a hospital grade pump (the medela symphony is amazing) until you're done with the meds! So sorry you're dealing with this :(

@Pepper: Pump like crazy! I'm so afraid of someone even looking at my boobs funny because it might make my supply dip, lol! It will also help clear the infection faster.

@Espion: This is my thought... I don't want to do anything that could potentially hurt him. I'm assuming I will need to pump and dump and feed formula until the medication is done. I don't have a problem with formula, but I'm a little sad that this could end breastfeeding for us if my supply diminishes. We were doing really well!

@hilsy85: Yeah the cross reaction possibility scares me... I actually don't know how allergic I am because I had a reaction when I was really little.

@Pepper: Bactrim is safe in babies, but not in newborns. I generally don't give it to babies less than 2 months of age, because it can cause an increase in unconjugated bilirubin levels; and therefore, jaundice. Jaundice is usually not a big deal, but if the bilirubin levels are high enough, then it can cause neurologic problems. To be completely safe, I wouldn't breastfeed while taking Bactrim. True, the risks are probably small, but I'm of the "why chance it?" group.

So things are a little more complicated now. I am not able to take cylindamycin because of an illness I had several years ago. I am allergic to penicillin. So that leaves the Bactrim as my only option. My OB and another pediatrician that was in the office today said to continue breastfeeding; as the benefits outweigh any risks. I just don't want to expose him to any risks! I'm getting such conflicting information. One ped says no, another says yes! Ugh.

@hilsy85: My doctor sucked in general, so I was kind of hesitant to post that...I'm happy to hear that someone else had the same experience with clindamycin!

@pepper: good luck, I hope you feel better soon! Mastitis is no joke, especially when you're already exhausted and trying to figure out how to take care of your newborn.

I'm glad everything is working out in terms of feeding the baby! We also supplemented with a few bottles of formula in those early weeks, and it turned out absolutely fine! We are EBF at this point and he's almost five months old.

I just wanted to chime in and add that I am also allergic to penicilin and my doctor prescribed clindamycin when I got mastitis when my baby was three weeks old, and we kept breastfeeding with no issues. He ended up getting really gassy, so I started taking some probiotics, and we both got straightened out within a week.

Although maybe take my advice with a grain of sand, because my doctor also told me to pump and dump because I had mastitis, and my lactation consultant told that that advice was ridiculous and outdated and nursing actually helps treat it!

I am so sorry that your OB prescribed you something that you can't BF on!!! I would be seriously pissed off--you would think he of all doctors would know you're breastfeeding, or at least think to ask! I would just give the formula as is--I hope you're feeling better! Is there any way your OB can switch your meds so you can take one that you can nurse on so you don't need to worry about pumping/giving bottles of formula? I hope things are going ok!!

According to lactmed Bactrim shouldn't be used in the newborn period but in general is safe and compatible with breastfeeding. Definitely don't dump! Freeze the milk you pump tonight, label it so you know to use later, and use it when lo is older.

When we introduced formula, we mixed it with breastmilk since he didn't like it "straight." I would be hesitant to mix if you have only 3oz. Maybe try as is first, then if he refuses, mix to see if he'll take it.

I am freaking out. Ugh. I have mastitis, and I'm allergic to penicillin, so my OB prescribed Bactrim for me. I took my first dose and fed him, as my OB instructed me to do so. Well, I started wondering if Bactrim was safe to take while breastfeeding, as I found some conflicting information. I called the on call pediatrician. The ped said since he is under a month old, I'm not to breastfeed while on Bactrim. Wtf?? I literally can't believe my OB prescribed something that isn't safe!!

So now I'm to pump and dump and feed him formula. We have some ready to feed similac here, but I literally have no idea how to do this. Should I be mixing it with pumped breastmilk at first? I have a measly 3 oz in the fridge that I can use. This is a nightmare, especially when I'm this tired and have a fever :( any advice would be appreciated, as the ped didn't really give me much information about how to introduce formula.
