I had to avoid spicy food and broccoli because it would upset DD's stomach in the early days. After a few months, it didn't seem to bother her.

It sounds like some babies are more sensitive but I'm a spicy food fan and I didn't hold back during pregnancy and I don't now that I'm breastfeeding. It didn't really occur to me to change my diet in that way and LO hasn't had any problems.

My twins had bad reflux and it seemed worse when I ate REALLY spicy food so I avoided it. It never bothered my daughter but caffeine did. I think it just depends on the baby.

I'm EBF and eat most foods but I have found that too much of any one food (cheese, chocolate, sugar etc) or anything too rich can make LO a wee bit fussier than usual

My LC said the only thing that gets into your milk like that is alchohol, caffeine, and milk protein. She said it's a misconception that food gets into your milk that way. :)

My MIL told me this too. She said I need to eat a bland diet. She did when she nursed her youngest. Well her youngest is the pickiest eater ever!! Like previous posters, I have also heard to eat a varied diet and LO will like a variety of foods

@Cherrybee: my lactation consultant actually told me garlic was good for bf'ing, generally babies like the flavor!

I don't have to avoid anything luckily, and I ate a wide range of stuff while pregnant.

My MIL said this to me the other day!! She was worrying about what casseroles to make us after the baby is born because all her go to recipes have garlic in! I queried this and she told me that you can't eat garlic or spices while you are breastfeeding because the flavour goes into the milk and the baby will refuse to drink it!

Well, when I got home I consulted Dr Google and discovered that this isn't necessarily true. Some babies will dislike certain flavours but most will be fine with them. When the baby is in the womb, he/she practices swallowing by taking gulps of amniotic fluid which will taste like the food mum has eaten.... making sure you eat a varied diet in pregnancy and while breastfeeding may actually mean the child is a less fussy eater when he/she grows up!

Me 1: MIL 0. Hahahaha - I'm joking! Kinda.....

I don't avoid spicy foods either but I have heard of it. I want my Lo to have a varied palate though so I eat almost everything. Except for asparagus because it makes her poop smell funny.

@Mrs. Pen: I had a close friend who EBF and continued to nurse until her DS was 18 months but could not eat anything. He was so sensitive to everything.
On the other hand, I could eat anything and DS never had any kind of reaction. And I'm talking like, heaps of jalepenos and wasabi, curry, all of it :)

It seems like a lot of people assume that babies will only like bland flavors, and I know a lot of women who avoid spicy (or any heavily flavored foods) while nursing so the spice won't bleed through into their milk. And some babies don't tolerate it well. I didn't avoid it at all, and so far E has had no problems with moderately spicy foods.

It's a pretty common misconception that you automatically have to avoid spicy stuff. The only things I've had to avoid are the proteins P's intolerant too.... she's been find with spicy & acidic food just fine.

So I was at panera yesterday and chatting with another lady while we waited in line. She asked for a salad recommendation and I told her my fave was the Thai chopped chicken salad and rattled off what was in it and the spicy dressing. She said, "oh, we'll I'm getting it for a friend of mine who is nursing, so I guess I can't get it since its spicy." I was confused and told her I'm nursing and I eat it! She exclaimed "oh!" And decided to get that and another salad so her friend had a choice.

Anyone ever heard of not being able to eat spicy foods while nursing? If so I'm screwed!! Haha. I love spicy food! And so does J lol!
