@edelweiss: I missed your birth post, mama. Congratulations!

And for "drowsy but awake" you just find out over time what it means for your baby--every baby is different. Just keep trying and you will figure out his cues. And it is still very early--most babies can't figure this out till about 3 months old.

I've heard that if it's tough to put a baby down to sleep, you're either trying too early or too late. So maybe try experimenting? That being said, I also think that your guy is still pretty little to be soothing himself to sleep from a drowsy state, so don't get discouraged if he's not doing it yet!! It will come, you won't be rocking him to sleep forever :) if nothing else, there's sleep training when he's a bit older!

@highwire: @mrsjyw: thanks for the advice, ladies! it's making me think that i'm putting him into the crib and possibly starting the sleep routine a little too early--i think i'm forcing the issue a little bit instead of letting him get sleepy enough. this is so helpful--thank you!

DS would yawn frequently, but I would also double check how long he'd been awake to make sure that it was his "sleepy" time. For naps, it almost always has to be within the 1 hr 15 min - 1.5 hour window...if I try to put him down earlier or later it's almost always a fight....

As for nighttime sleep DS has been STTN for the last week (he's 3 months tomorrow) and we got in the habit of putting him down early 7/730 pm starting week 6. I suffered from week 6-week 11 when he had 1-3x night wakings on/off, but now he sleeps 7-7 and it is glorious!

Our nighttime routine includes: bathtime, massage/lotion, dipe change, nurse, burp/story, put down in crib with white noise/humidifer.

I wait for the third yawn (which sometimes takes 10+ minutes). And for her eyes to get really, really, really droopy (but not dead asleep).

Routine is diaper change, swaddle sleep sack, we sit it in the glider together, DH reads a story, he puts on the sound machine, leaves. I rock her until I get those three yawns and can see that she is very, very tired. Then I gently place her in the crib, make sure her eyes are closing, turn off the light, leave the room.

My little guy is 4.5 weeks old, and I'm trying to get a handle on what "drowsy but awake" means for his naps and bedtime. I've read that once as a baby yawns, he is tired and to put him to bed. However, little E will yawn and then his eyes fly wide open. Even if I start the sleep process at that point by swaddling, rocking and singing a lullaby, if I put him to bed in that state, it's almost a 100% guarantee that I'll have to rinse and repeat several times for up to an hour.

Is this just part of it and I have to suck it up, or should I be waiting longer? A lot of times I try to wait until his eyes are drooping, but that usually doesn't happen until at least 20 minutes after the yawns begin, and I worry that he'll be overtired at that point and that I'm not giving him a chance to fall asleep early enough.

Did any of your little ones do the same thing, where they would yawn but otherwise seem wide awake? What kind of sleep training/putting to bed strategies did you use?

Thanks in advance!
