@HappyBaker: Have you made any decisions about where to stay (if you are still planning on going)? We decided to go again this year and I am debating if we should stay at the same place we did two years ago or try some place else.

Oceanfront is definitely very expensive. But I spent a few weeks there last summer with family, and we had a house a few blocks away from the beach. It's a very bike friendly town… We rode our bikes to and from the beach every day and there was parking for bikes at the beach entrance.

We love the Jersey Shore and usually stay in Avalon. Cape May is very cute, and we absolutely love going there as well. The only thing is that you're definitely not going to get as much for your money as you will in OBX. An oceanfront is going to be ridiculously expensive. Think triple what you're paying for a giant house in OBX.

The nice thing about the Jersey Shorepoints is that they're a quick drive from one another. So you can drive up to the Ocean City boardwalk or to the FREE Cape May County Zoo.

We always use homeaway.com to find our rentals for the Jersey shore.

@Ms. RV: oh yeah, we did the concrete ship too and went to that little gift shop out there. Cute store. I forgot about that!

We went to Cape May two years ago and are going again this year, and I had gone about 10 times growing up. We stayed at the Marquis Hotel two years ago, which is oceanfront. It isn't the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at, but wasn't the worst either. It is very close to the walking mall and includes a breakfast buffet.

If you like seafood, you must go to H&H. A lot of their stuff they catch themselves. We also had an amazing breakfast at McGlades (crab and asparagus omelette.... mmmmmm).

We saw the concrete ship and the lighthouses but it wasn't anything too thrilling. I was happy just to chill on the beach everyday. At night we walked on the promenade.

@Anagram: Oh yea that would help! Yes we would be bringing our kids, who will be 4 and 2 at the time. Totally agree about needing to be oceanfront with kids, which is why OBX is so awesome.

Are you going with kids? There are a lot of hotels and rentals in Cape May, so I don't have any particular tips there. With kids, I personally would look for a place on the beach or super super close. (Some rentals and evens some hotels are further back away from the beach). Even if it's walking distance, with kids I need to be oceanfront so we can go back and forth easily.

As far as things to do--there is a zoo. I haven't been but we thought about going last time. Beach, obviously. There's the Cape May lighthouse and we climbed it with our two girls. It says no baby carriers, but we went with our youngest in a baby carrier anyway and no one said anything about it. There's the Cape May-Lewes ferry, which we went on (because we spent a few days in Cape May, a few days in Ocean City, Maryland, and 2 days in Wildwood, so we could have a mix of each experiences.)
Cape May has a lot of cute little restaurants. Wildwood isn't far and has an amazing boardwalk with pier rides and stuff for the littles. I can't remember if Cape May had something similar.

It is very nice but you won't get as much for your money from what I hear. I've never been to Outer Banks. I like Cape May, it's really nice and has a cute area to walk around and shop and plenty of places to eat but does not have a boardwalk if you care about that. My aunt lives there year-round and we always enjoy visiting her. We stay with her but when we've traveled with my parents and family, we have rented houses. I think most rentals are houses, not a ton of hotels right there.

The winter weather has me looking WAY ahead to next summer and starting to plan a vacation. I've always heard Cape May is great, has anyone been that could recommend things to do / where to stay? We LOVE Outer Banks but the drive is too far now so I'm hoping Cape May can be our new spot to spend a week!
