So glad I asked about layering before buying a bunch of tops. LS onesies will work. TY

@Smurfette: this past weekend was a bit nippy for me, but you're right I just stepped outside and it's hot!

Just FYI if he's in day care I would check with his school on the hoodies. Our daycare doesn't allow infants to wear hoodies because of the risk of them getting tangled around their necks when they roll around in their sleep.

I think at that age I had at least 20 onsies/tops and 10 pairs of pants. My daughter was so messy I usually had to change her top at least twice a day, and we only do laundry once a week.

I did use some of the tank style under short sleeved tees, I was really annoying about keeping his back covered, so the majority of the tops my son wore the first year were onesies, long and short sleeved.

I did have some short sleeved tops that I layered over long sleeved onesies. I also converted some turtlenecks to onesies, with stitch witchery for under overalls.

Hmmm...I was gifted a lot of short sleeve shirts, so I bought long sleeve onesies that I layered under the short sleeve shirts.

For more typical layering, I used short sleeve onesies under long. I don't think I've ever seen the tank style ones, good to know they exist!

The weather is turning already. I will get LO long sleeve shirts with the envelope head opening to layer over onesies. I don't want him to burn up though.

Q: for those that layer a basic Carter's onesie under a baby tee/ shirts (no snaps at crotch), do you get tank style onesie or short sleeve?

So I always have way too many clothes for LO (much more than I am recommending here), but I would make a recommendation to have at least 10 of each top/bottom piece, as you can definitely need 3 changes in a day at that age! We also got away from sleep and plays after month 5 or 6, because I liked being able to change just one piece of an outfit if a spill or mess happened.

And an unsolicited FYI, my daycare really discourages hooded clothing unless outdoors, as other kids can grab a hood and pull hard without meaning to injure, or it can get caught easily in things. They definitely won't put a kid to sleep wearing one. The few times I sent LO in something hooded, they changed her into her spare outfit immediately.

As others have said, babies are a lot harder on clothes after they start eating solids and crawling. 6-8 months was also when my daughter's clothing needs changed a lot. Her body shape changed, she started crawling at 6 months and pulling up at 7 months, she started squirming away from getting dressed. By 6 months, we were done with one piece pajamas, by 8 months we were done with onesies.

She's 11 months now, and we have a ton of clothes. But if I were to get down to basics it would be roughly:

6 pairs leggings or lightweight pants
2 pairs nice pants
2 pairs shorts
1 skirt
2 dresses
6 tshirts
6 long sleeve shirts
2 lightweight sweatshirts
1 heavier sweatshirt/jacket
8 pairs of socks
3 sets of two piece pajamas
1 pair robeez soft sole shoes

I'm in the Northeast, so climate is totally different and I wouldn't be much help, wardrobe-wise. However, I recommend Zutano fleece booties - get them at Amazon. They're warm and cozy and not so easy for kids to get off.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I would skip those, hoodie tees for naps, I wouldn't trust daycare to remember to tuck the hood in for naps and my son was a mover once he was no longer swaddled...like waking up in the opposite corner that I laid him down in, but that's just me.

@looch: pics attached of the hooded tee. For daycare and daytime naps I think these will be ok. I can always tuck the hoddie into the back of the shirt when he sleeps.

@ShootingStar: the sleepers can easily be all day weekend outfits. He's only been at daycare for this past full week, but I put him in one piece shorties and onesies & leggings. It felt more like he was getting dressed for school that way. On a lazy weekday morning sending him to school in PJs doesn't seem all that bad.

ETA: just checked on those cargo pants and they are pricey, I'll have to stock up on other pant options until he is truly playing outdoors.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I would definitely get some onesies to keep his belly covered and to layer with other things. I like Carter's onesie packs since (a) they are literally always on sale and (b) you can mix and match them since the packs all tend to match each other each season. Keep in mind he might grow like crazy once he starts solids (or for any other reason) and might not wear that size until spring!! My daughter was wearing size 18 month by 10 months old and is currently in a 4t and sometimes 5t at 2 years old because she is ridiculously tall. I try not to get her too much at a time because I'm never sure when she is gonna have a growth spurt and I don't really want to buy two or more complete wardrobes per season.

I always had my son in a onesie under his pajamas, plus he had a sleepsack...we kept his room on the cool side and I would check him to see if he was too warm, it seemed to work.

What are hoodie tees? Can he sleep in these tops or does he need to be changed out of it...that was my litmus test for tops.

Are you going to use the sleepers as PJs or outfits? I think by about 4 months we stopped using sleepers as outfits and we pretty much only put him in pants and onesies during the day.

As for how much, personally I like to have 2 full weeks worth of clothes. We aim to do laundry every week and that doesn't always happen. And you always use more than outfits per day than you think, so to get to a week and a half without laundry I need at least 2 weeks of clothes.

@T.H.O.U.: I'm in luck then. The cotton cargo pants come in three colors, which will bring his pants total to 10. Hopefully, Bonds still has his size when I order from them again. The sleep n play PJs can be worn with or without the feet covered. I started using the sleep n plays just for night time thinking changing him into them would be a bedtime cue, but they are cute enough to wear out.

We had a lot more clothes than that. There were at least several pairs of leggings (8-10), onesies, shirts, socks, and sleepers. I only had one jacket at that age though, a fleece one for the car. I cloth diaper and don't like washing kid clothes more than once every couple of weeks because I am doing a load of diapers every 2-3 days. Plus, clothes can shrink, they can get destroyed, or your baby could grow faster than expected. H is a peanut so she can wear stuff forever.

For our similar climate I also loved the one piece romper style with pants and long sleeves. I think its hard for them to crawl in the sleep and plays with feet. So I had about 3-5 of these in his size as an easy "outfit".

The matching sets are always cute, but its just one outfit and doesn't mix and match well. I find for boys, having a pair of khaki, navy and gray pants/shorts works well and seems to match everything. Girls clothes were much harder in that the shades of pink and such never matched up.

I like the idea of capsules but I can't make them work with my LO because you really can't know how much they will need. Definitely at that age, you will need more clothes than you think because they start to stain stuff and also scuff up pants with crawling. You also can't know for sure how long your LO will last in that size.

My strategy is usually to buy a small amount of stuff (similar amount to what you have listed) and then supplement as needed over the next few months. Bonus being that if you buy in the middle or end of a season, there are usually good sales.

Edited to add: Also, double-check that you have enough clothes for daycare. Ours requires at least 3 outfit changes to be there at all times. There were definitely times in that age range where she went through 2 or 3 of them in a day.

Oh and at that age I mostly did long sleeve onesie with pants- preferably pants with feet attached so I didn't have to bother with socks. Layering was just too much bother! But we received tons of cute matching outfits from Carter's as gifts, which I think might not be your style.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: layering a onesie under pajamas depends how cold his room gets. The nursery in our condo is the coldest room so some nights we would put a short sleeve onesie underneath, but not usually. But she also wore a sleep sack until well past a year I think so we did a fleece sleep sack over cotton pjs, or thin cotton sleep sack over fleece pjs, in the winter. But we are in New England.

And yeah I think a few extra sleep and plays would be good for back up outfits at day care and the diaper bag!

I can't really remember the specifics of how many if each thing we found helpful but I do know that it helped tremendously to make sure just about everything mixed and matched. For us pink served as a basic so having a handful of relatively plain pink tops and bottoms meant they matched all the other stuff that had prints or designs on them. This fall/winter I'm trying to make sure most everything goes with either pink or navy. I know we have shoes to match then etc.

@Foodnerd81: this will be my first Fall and Winter in a new climate. Seasons change here and get colder, but I don't know how much yet.

For his daycare extra outfit (3-6 mos) I picked up a Walmart sleep & play for $5! Once he gets into solids I suppose the extra outfit might actually get used. I'll make sure to have an extra sleep n play and separates I can leave & rotate each week. Good catch!

Right now we still wash his clothes separately in Method or Dreft twice a week.

@looch: right now we are using onesies as tops. The hoodie tees are meant to be layered. Some days I imagine just a single layer is all he will need. Everything so far he has worn has covered his belly. IDK how annoying or cold a shirt that rides up would be.

Did you layer a onesie under PJs? LO is still in the no blanket stage. He didn't like swaddling, so I'm not sure if he will like a sleep sack or wearable blanket.

Im a bad example. I keep a separate stash of play clothes and back up daycare clothes. But besides that:
- A weeks worth of day to day clothes. So at least 7 tops and 7 bottoms. With starting solids and the mix of fall/winter weather it probably is more like 5 SS tops and 5 LS tops
- 3-5 more special occasion or nicer outfits. Things we can dress up in if we are going to a party or out to dinner. Sometimes I get brave and let them wear those to daycare too.
- 7-8 pairs of PJs again, often in a mix of lighter and heavier weight.

I agree with what @Foodnerd81: said about 6-12 months the clothes really start taking a beating. We would have to change her shirt and often her pants at every meal.
