@PinkElephant: and of you use "Guided Access" she can't exit the app you put her in without a pin code. 😬 I tried putting a game on my book for him and he kept closing it, so I get that!

@LCTBQE: I've never sat in the back, except when doing a long drive with a VERY small baby, when we lived in the city and rarely drove anywhere - and now with three in the back, there's no room anyway, unless I flip up a seat in my third row and sit behind them :)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Hahaha, she DOES love music, but often "sings" so loudly that it's almost as bad as the crying :silly:

@MrsKRB: I'm pretty sure this would happen! I'm kind of surprised so many people use these successfully for kids so young! But, she also likes to suck the color out of markers, so water sounds like a better alternative!!

@Sams Mom: Not bad at all! I just don't think mine could hold the ipad with out clicking out of the movie app.- I may have to look into some kind of case for her.

@mrswin: @Ms.Mermaid: @808love: @Mrs. Champagne: @LadyDi: @Foodnerd81: @snowjewelz: @looch:

Thanks for all the ideas (and sorry if I missed anyone) - we have a lot of these things stashed away from my older daughters, and it just hadn't really crossed my mind that "the baby" might be ready for them. Time to break them out and give it a try!

Another vote for both water wow and the mini off brand magna doodle. Also: sturdy flap books, a little bag with things to take in and out of it (finger puppet, fake credit card from junk mail, bracelet, handkerchief), taggie toy, fabric books.

At this age we got a TON of mileage out of decks of flash cards. The best are the shapes/colors ones but we had good luck with go fish cards and with dinosaur memory - she didn’t play with the games, she just loved sorting them. Target has them for back to school in the dollar spot.

Have you tried books on tape? We listened to books on tape since my son was born and I think he started getting into them around 2. She might be too young but the older ones would like it and she could grow into it. We listened to a lot of Geronimo Stilton and Hank the Cowdog, The Book with no pictures, Fancy Nancy, etc. at that age. Just look for lower reading levels. We don't have a built in video and my kids rarely get the iPad in the car and they are just fine with books on tape.

@Sams Mom: I intentionally don’t let my kids watch something on shorter rides because i don’t want them begging for it every time we get in the car. But long trips are totally different. I try to occupy them with other things first just so I have the big guns to pull out at the end of the trip when they are really losing it.

@Foodnerd81: Ugh I so agree! Even DD1 who was like 21 months when she went on her first road trip did so much better than my 17 month old.

@Sams Mom: Girl I let my 17 month old watch iPad on our recent road trip. I get really car sick by tending to both of them so I NEEDED for them to just sit still and not need anything for a while!

@LCTBQE: I always sat in the back...part of the reason was I would get into the car and sit to do the buckling so I wasn't on display in the parking lot. I would get frustrated easily and when people would pull up and start blinking, honking, edging closer, I would get fumbly and have a hard time buckling. Since we only had one car at the time, my husband would just get the stroller in the car while I did what I had to do and since I was there, I stayed put.

I don't mind sitting in the back and when my son was smaller, it was a lot easier to deal with him on longer trips. But I know I am not the norm in this at all.

@LCTBQE: I’ve never sat in the back. I’ve felt from the beginning that car trips are something that my kids need to accept and they are not going to figure it out with me back there. Having said that, I’ll always play kid music if asked to and as soon as my kid turned 2, I used the iPad for drives over 45 min (so no, .@Sams Mom:, I don’t think it’s awful  ).

Is it bad that my FF 2 year old watches a movie on long trips on the car DVD player? Because that is totally how we make it through long trips.

@LCTBQE: I sat in the backseat with my son while my husband was home for 2 weeks after he was born. Also I couldn't drive for most of that because of my c-section, so I rode in the back to distract me from telling my husband he was driving too fast or something... Now if someone is in the backseat with him he's talking their ear off (usually Nana and she doesn't mind at all)

@mrswin: AWESOME! I get carsick very, very easily and hate riding in the back and my husband is a control freak about driving, I really long to just sit in the passenger seat like an adult human. We don't even do longer trips (like ever) so this is super liberating to hear your style. Also great tip about McDonalds--just had a flashback to how unbelievably effective it was as a bribe for us when we were kids :)

@LCTBQE: I’ve never sat in the back seat. Whenever we have people riding with us and someone (typically a grandmother) wants to sit in back, one or both kids ends up crying. It’s as though they don’t like an adult back there.

@LCTBQE: Hopefully your LO likes it!
Neither one of us sits in the back seat EVER (lol). It makes her angry that we are back there and then she starts demanding hugs and snuggles to get out of her seat. We buckle her in, make sure she has her “things” and then get in the front. When we do a longer drive (2+ hours) we usually plan to leave in the morning right after she gets up and stop about an hour in a McDonald’s or a restaurant for breakfast which gets her out of the seat for a bit and then she will tolerate the rest of the drive better.

I think that’s the worst age for long car trips- old enough to know they are bored but not old enough to entertain themselves. We got a Boogie Board for mine and it helps sometimes, as well as a travel size magnadoodle. New little toys, like those busy books, but my LO is 2.5 now and old enough to not put them in her mouth. Tons of snacks of course. I’ve also started letting her watch my old iPod or the kindle fire though.

Just had first road trip (3.5 hours) with DD2 whose 1.5. She shared her sister's water wow books. I caved and got a buckle toy. Buckle toy was great BUT she got frustrated when she couldn't buckle (but still great).

And honestly I let her watch the iPad. I don't foresee another road trip anytime soon anyway. It was a bit of a pain to detox her after the trip, but for the peace it afforded me it was worth it lol.

@PinkElephant: No one wants a screamer on a car ride :silly:
We have a couple of these for DD and she loves them

We also keep a collection of books in the car for her to “read”. We rotate them out every so often but try and make sure they are lift-the-flap or the ones with he noises.

The other thing we have used on longer trips is colour wow books/markers and reusable stickers from Melissa and Doug
