@DesertDreams88: Regarding the replacement car, we just got a brand new Subaru which replaced a 2012 vw and our rate went down...so older will not necessarily mean a lower rate.

When you say $100 to $450 do you mean per month?
Also, shop around for coverage if you can. We also got a better deal on insurance by bundling everything with our home insurance and by adding an umbrella policy. Do you have an agent or do you directly buy through the insurer?

@DesertDreams88: I'm not sure about how much it will go up but I like the logic of searching for a car that will have a lower rate. If you call your agent with the VIN numbers of cars you're considering they can just run the numbers pretty quickly. I'm sure there are articles out there with lists in cars to pick vs avoid too. I know we were surprised that some newer cars were cheaper because of certain safety features etc.

@LBee: Thanks for the reply. Your reply prompted me to re-direct my search to older cars to hopefully help with the insurance rate, which I hadn't thought of. I am also definitely having some driving anxiety. I haven't driven since the accident Tuesday morning.

I'd have to check the exact figures, but I did this in 2014 and the rate was most impacted by my car replacement (newer car meant higher rate) and the totaling of my car impact was pretty negligible.

ETA: sorry about the wreck, I had a lot of PTSD after my wreck and it took me awhile to feel comfortable driving again.

I also hadn't had a wreck in 10+ years prior or a ticket. When I do something I like to make sure it's super dramatic and costly 😂

So... I totaled my car on Tuesday. I was at fault and I feel SO, so stupid. There was a car in my blind spot. No one was hurt thankfully but this is going to set us back a lot of $$$.

Car insurance said they wouldn't change our rates until June, when our plan gets renewed. I'm so nervous what is going to happen. If you had a car totaled, esp. if you were at fault, how much % did your insurance go up by?

Background: I had a very minor fender bender in Sept 2013 (not my fault) and in Oct 2015 (at fault) and my insurance went up from $100 to $450 because of two claims in 2 years :( Even though they were VERY minor, only $100-$300 of damage to my car each time and $500 or so to the other car. Now this will be my 3rd claim in 4 years, UGH. I did get them to re-set my $450 rate back down to $100 through accident forgiveness, but that was only once.
