@Clementine12: If you are buying a new seat for travel, make sure to keep the box. We have always checked our car seat (the few times we have flown with it) in the box, which makes me feel much better about its being transported safely.

@Clementine12: I’m in nyc and practically everyone has the Cosco scenara next for their travel seat (meaning in and out of cabs every day plus air travel). I might be wrong but I think it’s also what the car seat lady recommends.
No frills/bells/whistles, but it is light, cheap and safe. I think it’s like $40.

If you want something a little more “cushy” but not crazy, I have the safety1st, I think it’s the guide 65. We like it - easy enough to install with latch and my son has never complained. We got it at 18 months and schlepped it all around Israel and it was great.
And I would get the Brica car seat bag. Rolls, has shoulder straps like a backpack, it’s very durable.

I just need to pop in here, as we have had some pretty terrible experiences with renting car seats directly from car rental agencies at airports.
The first issue was when we rented a convertible carseat for our then-toddler daughter. We arrived to the airport at our destination city, only to discover they had none. Zero. They tried to tell me that she would be fine in an infant bucket seat (she was three!), handing it to me and walking away. It took almost 3 hours and me crying before they relented and called another one of their locations and had one transferred.
Another time we rented both a bucked and convertible seat, and we were given a seat that was cracked for our younger daughter. I was fastidious about checking them over and couldn't believe they would be so haphazard about what they rent out. Again, we had to argue and refuse to leave until they gave us something else to use. And then we drove directly to splash way more $ than planned on new seats as I trusted the ones we rented about as far as I could throw them.
In the end we opted to always travel with seats, bringing them on the plane and keeping them with us. It was a huge pain but the only way I felt safe.

I've personally rented car seats from a rental agency and never had an issue. There is no way they want the insurance risk should you get into an accident. If you're worried, make sure you're renting with a reputable agency.

Def check Costco. Their prices have been amazing everywhere we’ve booked through them. And sometimes they will add on an extra driver for free

I’d bring your own car seat. I’ve seen some seats they rent;
Sometimes they are fine. Others are disgusting or might be broken and you wouldn’t know.
If you are traveling internationally you have to often pay a lot for an automatic. Often a manual is standard overseas.
Don’t do the option to have them fill it; always return it with a full tank
My husband doesn’t care about this, but do a thorough walk around with the car when you get it

Know what your credit card covers. If you are going to a high crime area (typically internationally) consider the LDW. Different credit cards often cover some damage, but not loss of the car and if you injure someone else in an accident, that often isn’t covered. Bottom line, just know what your credit card covers and don’t pay twice for insurance you already have.

A lot of times you can save and bundle your flight, rental, and hotels.

I prefer Hertz, but Enterprise isn't bad. Also if you or your husband are part of an alumni group, AAA, various national organizations you might get a discount also.

Check the details of the car seat rental. Some places charge per day, so it’s most likely better to bring your own. Also, check the trunk size. We rented a car last year and only just barely managed to squeeze all of our luggage into the trunk after reorganizing it a few times.

@Clementine12: Check into your insurance situation before accepting the rental company's options. My credit card covers car rental damage so I don't need the extra. I think so car insurances offer similar coverage.

I have rented one car in my life, locally while my car was repaired. I'm a newbie.

It's looking like we'll rent a car for a week on an upcoming vacation. Any tips? Any company recommendations? We'll be renting at the airport.

ETA - we'll need a carseat, too! DD will be just shy of 2.
