We use a 3 in 1 coat - the inner coat is fleece with a wind breaker exterior. Warm blanket in the car. We bring the outer coat if she will be outside for a long period of time.

We tried the patagonia down sweater this year but it didn't work for DD in the car.

@bees_knees: i think the columbia fleece is about right and then you can have them put their actual jacket on backwards OVER the seatbelt. its a pain but thats what we did when we lived in a cold state

We have done Patagonia down sweaters, Gap primaloft, and North Face thermoball. They are all very thin. Plus we keep blankets in the car to go on top.

This is why I want a minivan, haha!

Currently if it's cold we just put a fleece on top of what she's wearing. Sometimes we just dash in and out wrapping her in our jacket and don't even bother with her jacket.

I have this baby wearing blanket that I use on her... It's a thick plush fleece blanket that snaps together at neck like a cape... So I wrap it on her to get out, turn it around to her front to buckle her in and leave it there as a blanket.

I bought a few down quilted throw blankets at costco and keep them in the car. That way if LO ends up without a warm jacket on, we're ok. We have to walk 5 blocks to get to our garage, so she's either in the stroller bundle or in a super bulky down coat, so I need something in the car at all times.

Look for a packable down jacket. They're designed to be warm, but to roll up into little pouches, so they'd be carseat safe.

We do down sweaters or similar NF too. It's totally fine playing in the snow for a bit over snow pants or in a light drizzle in terms of waterproofness but it's not like a shell, you wouldn't want to ski in it or be out in a rainstorm.

We have North Face Thermoball jackets - but before getting those this year I just had them wear their fleeces in the car. If we were going somewhere where we would be outside once we got there I brought their heavier coat in the car with us.

Right now W (11 months) is wearing a heavy fleece lined sweater from Gymboree and B (3) just takes his coat off when he gets in the car which I would think would be freezing but it's his choice - I figure he's old enough to decide if he wants to be cold.

We got a Lands Wnd Squall coat for next year. I wasn't happy with his coat situation this year. We had a fleece coat but then it was a pain for daycare because we needed to bring a second coat every day. The coat I got was listed on the car seat for little website as car seat safe and it's not bulky at all but it's rated for -5 to 25 degrees.

Lands end is having a 50% off 1 item today for anyone who's interested, making only around $22! http://www.landsend.com/products/boys-squall-jacket/id_301995?sku_0=::VXL

@Grace: thanks! We actually have a 3 in 1 like this too, but it seems like so much work to zip it in/out when the freezing cold wind is blowing on your babies and you just want to get indoors! Orrrrr maybe I just need to practice doing it so I can get quicker haha

@tinyperson: @Foodnerd81: we have blankets too, and the thin fleeces. We also (THANK GOD) have a heated garage, so it's most just an issue when running errands, dr appts, etc. I just think they need some kind of coat on in the seat...they're both too little to do their own coats, and having us all in the cold while I try to put both their coats in doesn't make much sense :/

@Greentea: @PinkElephant: def looking into the Patagonia down sweaters. Thanks! Any experience with how waterproof they are? Out of curiosity:)

@PinkElephant: don't you love the stares you get when your kids don't have "appropriate" coats on. Like, you can't have them in a parka in their car seat, and in the time it takes for me to actually put parkas on them we could be inside already *eye roll*

More of the same - I've only started trying to do car seat coats recently, because with three kids in the car, it's not super easy to get coats on in the car...plus two of the three can't put on their own coats, and even the oldest struggles with zipping hers. I had been just letting them run into school with coats half on/open, but was feeling kind of weird about it, and decided to switch to our thinner coats and put them on at home. But the big girls hate wearing them in tge car....

I like Patagonia down sweaters, or the REI/Columbia equivalents. Gap sometimes has good primaloft coats, but they look to be sold out already.

@tinyperson: same- my 3 yo has a fleece and a thin coat that are car safe but she refuses to wear them in the car. So I have a thick fleece blanket that she puts over herself and I either hustle her inside fast if we park close, or have her put on the coat in the car before she gets out. It's harder with the baby but I just do fleece for her. We park in our garage so the car isn't too cold when we first get in.

What do your LOs wear? We live where it is COLD, and usually pretty windy too. LOs usually just wear Columbia fleeces in the car seat. In reality, that probably isn't warm enough...so looking for some thing, warmer, preferably wind proof-ish options for my two boys (currently almost 3 and 7 months. But would love to shop some sales for next season!) that is thin enough to still be safe in the car seat. Suggestions?! :)
