@Weagle: So my son weighs 36 pounds. He's in the Frontier, installed with LATCH. He will stay that way until he is 40 pounds, then he will go to Frontier, installed with the seatbelt, and remain in the 5 point harness. When we transition off the 5 point harness and go to the seatbelt, we can "hold" the seat in the car using LATCH. The primary reason for that, as I understand it, is to just keep the seat in position, so you don't have to buckle the seatbelt when your child isn't sitting in the seat.

@kiddosc: Thank you!

@looch: If I'm reading that correctly, that rule doesn't apply once you've moved to a seat belt since the LATCH is no longer taking all the force. I think we'll end up with the Frontier too!

It also depends on your car and seat manufacturers. Britax, for example, says you can't use latch when your child is 40 pounds ( not including seat).

Our harness to booster seat is the Britax Frontier, I specifically purchased it because of the ease if install using the seat belt.

Once you switch over to using the belt on your LO and the seat is just a booster the latch rules do not apply.

ETA: the 4th question down in this blog posts states that latch can be used for boosters.

I've been doing some research on combination booster seats just to prepare for LO's next switch (probably a year away). I keep seeing people recommend seats that use latch, especially when you get to phase of using the seat belt path, but how does that work with the new LATCH laws? I imagine that by the time LO is able to use the belt path we will be over the weight limits allowed for latch. Can someone clarify this for me?
