Just one more thing to keep in mind about lower anchor limits and overall seat limits for rear and forward facing - you need to account for all of the weight going in the seat. That means child weight plus clothes, shoes, full diaper, and full belly.

@agold: I'm so glad you posted this. It reminded me to check my seat's manual (Chicco Nextfit) and I need to change my install VERY soon. DS is 34 lbs at 2 years old and the max weight for LATCH rear-facing is 35 lbs with our seat. Then when he hits 40 lbs I'll have to turn him forward facing.

@DesertDreams88: omg I did not know that. Neither of my kids is in the middle (I don't want my toddler to endlessly poke the baby) but I definitely used LATCH in the middle for my older daughter's first three years! I want to throw up.

I think a lot of people know but also I'm not sure saying people have "huge kids rear facing" is totally accurate...? The limits are pretty high. The rear facing latch limit in my car is 65lb and our car seat weighs 24 lbs. So we have until our daughter is 41lb. She's over 3 years old, over 3 feet tall, and exactly 30 lb. We're keeping an eye on it of course, but the chances of her gaining 10lb this year, even though she looks (and is) pretty tall... if we chose to rear face to 4, are low.

@skipra: what car do you have? I tried to find a car with three sets of latch before I had my baby and don't remember finding any. Lucky you have one!

@DesertDreams88: my point was that some cars (probably more like larger SUV or mini van) have dedicated latch for the center seat. We have 3 sets in our car so no sharing necessary.

@catomd00: since 2014 the weight limit listed on the car seats is just the child weight. It takes into account the weight of the car seat already. If your seat was manufactured before February 2014 then yes you would need to account for both the seat and the child when determining the limit.

Since we are talking weight and car seats, it came up recently in another group that the lower anchor max weight limit includes the car seat + child weight together. It was frightening how many people said they had forgot to include the car seat weight when determining if their child was within the weight requirement!

We have fllos because they have a stopped easy seat belt install. Actually I've only ever used latch to install the base for our infant seat a few times. I've almost always gotten a better install with the seat belt even when we could still use latch.

I have also found that friends head no idea that latch had a easy to exceed weight limit. It feels dangerous that people don't know this.

I have read WAY too much about car seats....

@skipra: @catgirl: the list of car seat models AND cars that allow latch borrowing is VERY small, and like @catgirl: said, both have to allow it in order for it to be ok.

Eta: I just thought it would be good to add to the latch discussion here bc I didn't know it until I saw it here on HB when LO1 was 1m, and I thought I had done good car seat research :)

We use LATCH and I am worried about when we have to switch because I think the seat belt install is tricky with our seats. But the LATCH limit is 40lbs and my almost 5 year old is only 33 so we still have some time! And we do use LATCH for the center seat but it is designed for the center. So center seat LATCH for a 5 year old which sounds similar to the situation mentioned but it is acceptable.

I think even if you are used to using LATCH to install you should also know how to install with a seatbelt. You never know if you will be in a car, or seating position, that doesn't have lower anchors. Our convertible seats are currently installed with lower anchors but I made sure we could both do either installation.

@agold: just wanted to say that most of the time using the lower anchors for a middle seat install is wrong - but it's not always wrong. Some vehicles have three sets of lower anchors, some vehicles allowing lower anchor borrowing, as do some car seats. But if you are borrowing BOTH the vehicle and car seat have to allow it. So important to read both manuals.

But in general I agree with looch that a lot of people don't know what they are doing with car seats. It's really scary.

I find that a lot of people don't know what they are doing when it comes to car seats. I didn't know about LATCH limits when my son was a newborn, but I did read up about it when we switched him to a convertible seat.

Now, he's in a combination seat and one of the reasons why I chose the seat I did is because i can use the seat belt for the install and my son is still harnessed. The Britax technology for this is outstanding.

We have the Chicco Nextfit that we use rearfacing with the latch. I read the manual when we first installed it at 8 months but it wasn't until I saw a post about the 35 lb weight limit for the latch system on a car seat group on Facebook that I even remembered about the limit. I just looked at the seat and while the limit is posted, it's in a hard to see position on the seat. If you don't know to look for it I could see how it's easy to not know. We are 5 pounds away from the limit so I'm going to need to reread the manual to figure out how to get the best fit with the seatbelt.

You're definitely my crazy! I switched my then 3.5 into a clicktight for just that reason - it looked like I could only use latch up to about 40lb of kid. But I am going to have to think about it because my 2nd will probably stay in convertible longer since he won't hand down at that age and I'll need to learn the seatbelt install or buy a new seat. probably need to learn the seatbelt install for my moms house at a minimum.

@agold: for a car seat manufactured before 2014 you have to check your vehicle manual and car seat manual and determine the limit based on both. But yes, it is just as important to know! Vehicles have had lower anchor limits since they have been in cars.

The weight limits for lower anchors are extremely important to follow. If you use the lower anchors past the limit they could fail in an accident. All seats manufactured from 2014 on have the lower anchor limit directly on the seat - that limit takes in to account the vehicle limit as well. The stated limit is for child weight only.

Different seats have different limits mainly due to the different weights of seats.

But I've asked all my friends about LATCH weight limitations and they have no idea what I am talking about. They have their giant kids in car seats using LATCH. Do any of you know about or pay attention to LATCH weight limitations, or am I crazy for even asking anyone about this?
