I would personally bring a carseat for your 2 year old--it will be more comfortable for him on the plane and then you have one at your destination. I'm sure the cruise ship can store it for you, or there are good travel ones that are not that big--we have a safety first guide 65 for travel and it's pretty light and compact.

@cheert16: I'd look into a private company with town cars or vans. Miami taxis are notoriously expensive ($90 to take us from the airport to our hotel, which was less than 4 miles). We opted for a private service (actually, we shared the ride with 1 business man), and it was $50 + tip. They might even have their own car seats!!

@littlejoy: yup Miami- from what I have read they have to be in a carseat to ride in a taxi. Maybe they would store them for me- good idea- I should call now and see if they can add it to our reservation!

We don’t generally bring LO’s car seat when we travel, and are comfortable holding her in a taxi for short rides/distances; but everyone has different comfort levels, and if the ride from the airport to your hotel/ship is far, I'd bring seats for both.

FYI, if you are flying into Ft. Lauderdale airport, they will not allow your child to ride either a taxi, van, private car, shuttle – ANYTHING – leaving the airport if they are not in a car seat. Airport staff arranges all the taxis, etc. so you can't just like flag a cab and get around the rule. It’s legal in Ft. Lauderdale *city* to have a kid ride in a taxi without a car seat, but the airport is $pecial with their rules. We found this out the hard way, only after we had landed. Fun times.

I don't know the rules, but I would NOT feel comfortable with my child in a taxi without a carseat. It's a car. I'm not even sure they would allow it. Is it Miami?! Same with a van.

We took LO in the carrier on the shuttle, since there weren't belts or a way to secure a car seat. It felt safe.

Plane, we've done lap and car seat ... I prefer the car seat for safety, and selfishly, because I can relax and have space. For a 2 year old, I'd probably just have him in his own seat (but if you have to bring a car seat anyway, do you want it under the plane, possibly getting damaged?) ...

So many considerations! It's great that you're thinking of this now! :)

We cruised with Carnival (guests at a wedding), and they stored some of the wedding stuff at no charge. I wonder if they would do this for strollers/carseats? I would think it depends on the cruise line. The staff is usually SUPER accommodating ... we love cruising for this reason!

I believe it depends on the state. I know in NYC you can ride in a taxi without a car seat... but we personally choose not to do that. What about hiring a private car company to pick you up at the airport with their car seats in the car? We usually bring LO's car seat on the plane just because it's nice to have her strapped in where she can't run around. But it's not a necessity. I think having to store the car seats in your cabin on the ship would be a real PITA.

We are traveling to Florida for a cruise in October with my whole family (10 of us) and we are bringing both LO's. DS is 2 and will need his own seat and DD will be 10 months. DD will sit on our laps, and DS in his own seat. Not sure if I should be bringing a carseat for both kids. We will need to travel from the airport to the dock with the kids and I am not sure of the rules surrounding taxi's/ vans/ busses for that kind of thing! We would bring DD's bucket seat, and have to get a plane approved seat (that's not a million pounds like his carseats now are) to bring with us- then somehow store on the cruise ship in our stateroom. Thoughts on what we should do? Do I need a carseat for DS on the plane or can he just sit in the seat without one? Anyone know what the rules are for Taxi's, vans, busses??

Thanks in advance!
