I would measure his torso height before picking a seat. If he carries his height in his torso you will need to be most concerned with the harness height of a seat. I agree with previous suggestions - graco tranzitions/wayz, harmony defender, or the chicco myfit. I listed them in order of harness height, low to tall. All three are generally three across friends but the civic will be tight. The graco can be a challenge to install compared to the others.

I was recently looking for something similar and had it narrowed down to the Chicco Myfit and the Graco Tranzitions. We ultimately focused on the Myfit because folks said it installs more easily, and with a Subaru we couldn't risk a difficult install as it's already hard. The downside is the Myfit is almost twice the cost of the Tranzitions. Maybe you could try to install the Tranzitions in your car? The Harmony Defender was another recommended narrow seat but I was a little put off by the Consumer Reports crash test data (I already owned one of the other seats that didn't test well and I didn't get rid of it though...).

FWIW we didn't end up getting either because we were able to just use my husband's car seats for the summer babysitter so I can't provide actual feedback on how I liked the seats.

My 3.5 year old is about ready to outgrow his rear facing seat (already outgrown it forward facing) and I need recommendations about what to look for:
- He will be 3.75 years old and at least 35 lbs/39 inches when we flip him. He's all torso with short legs.
- I'm looking for a seat that will last for years, at least until LO2 outgrows his seat in 2ish years, but ideally until he's big enough for a booster.
- He barely used the car seat, so we don't need something super fancy
-it must be easy to install because we use a lot of rental cars
-it needs to be narrow because we are hoping to have 3 car seats in the back of a Civic.

What do you use? What do you love or suggest avoiding?
