We have a rule in our family that I discuss things with my family and DH does with his. That way there is no need for hard feelings between his family and me because of how I addressed something. If you're concerned about how he will handle it then I'd make my discussion with him a priority about DD's safety in the car.

If I was doing it incorrectly I would rather someone be direct vs sending me an article, which would leave me wondering if it was pointed at me anyway. I would not be at all offended if someone stopped me from putting a baby in an unsafe situation, but I guess for that kind if stuff I'm not easily offended.

Could someone link to an example of an article you would send? I'm still worried I'm not doing it right myself!

@looch: I wish I would have thought of that earlier! I honestly thought they would know because they used to drive DH's nieces around all the time.

My MIL is a huge email person so an email with an article will likely do the trick. I'm so not a direct person when it comes to her bc I just never know how she might take a suggestion. Depending on her mood. She's been on menopause mood swings for a decade! LOL

I thought of another thing, it might be too late for this, in this case, but if you think about it, you (general) didn't know how to work the seat when it came out of the box, you had to play around with it a little to determine the correct tightness on the straps, so what if you both learned how to use it together? Kind of like, here's the new seat, let's see how it works?

I am a fan of being direct, all these suggestions for videos and articles are lost on my parents, in all honesty!

@mrbee: probably DH but he has a tendency to be very casual too about these kinds of conversations. So if the article doesn't work I think I might do a better job getting the point across.

@loveisstrange: lol I'll send a article and cc DH too so it's not like I'm singling her out. Then probably bring it up casually the next time I see them.
If no change, then a more direct conversation a la @Mrs. Polish: ;)

i agree with @Mrs. Polish: i would be very direct and firm, feelings be damned. she needs to know how serious you are and how important it is. to me, there is nothing casual about carseat safety.

now i'm not saying you have to offend her but i would not skirt around it at all.

I deal with this often. The other day my sister buckled A in for me. When I got home the straps were not as tight as they should be. I kind of told a white lie but texted and said she got her shoulder out a little (actually it was pretty close) so if she could make sure the straps were tight, and tighter than what seems comfortable (everyone thinks the way it should be is too tight), she felt so bad bc she says she always checks the carseats. So then I mentioned how A's car seat was kind of a pain to get tight so it's not her fault. Her car seat really is a pain in the rear DH and I both hate how hard it is to get tight. Anyway, I was real light on the situation and didn't attack her and it went well!

I dealt with this with my parents, they were worried by pulling the straps tightly, they were making it difficult to breathe.

So one day, I was putting my son in the car, in the seat they would be using, and I showed them that if they can pinch the straps together, it was too loose and they needed to go tighter. When you say chest strap, do you mean the buckle, or what? I showed my mom that as well, that she has to put it further up.

My Mom used to have the chest buckle wayyy too low. I told her "at the carseat safety clinic we went to" they told us it is safest like this (and then I show her).

That way it's a "we" learned too, and not "you're doing it wrong" type message with the focus on "safest for baby"!

I would try to be pretty direct, or use a fake example.

"I just heard about a LO that died in a car crash because the buckles weren't properly adjusted. I researched how to do it properly, and even I learned a few things. Would you mind if I showed you how it should be done?"

Here's a different twist on the car seat safety question.

My ILs watch LO once a week now so naturally we bought a car seat for their car. When they just started watching her the straps were VERY loose. When i saw it I adjusted it and tightened it. But even now the chest strap is always down low an d not by her chest. :(

How do I mention it to my ILs without being insulting?

Sometimes my MIL can be very sensitive and I never know how she will take something!
