@SweetiePie: yeah I'm pretty strict with car seat stuff but I don't see how a very thin piece of fabric that doesn't interfere with chest clip placement could really affect it. But still, I'm paranoid and will probably just pull up her shirt for now...

I have a travel care seat that didn't come with those pads, but our main seat does. It is a HUGE difference!
I got thin JJ Cole pads/covers for the travel seat. They are "shearling" but really not bulky at all. I have a hard time believing they are unsafe. I think that's an extreme stance, and I feel ok with.

You can ask your carseat manufacturer if they sell them separately. Otherwise, aftermarket covers have not been tested with your seat, and aren't safe to use.

I took off our covers because they were too bulky, and I just made sure to pull LO's shirt up between the strap and his neck.

If your car seat did not come with strap covers (or, harness covers I guess), did you do anything to protect your LO's neck? I know you aren't supposed to use any after market products like bulky padded covers, but with C I remember her neck getting red marks from the straps if I wasn't really careful. It seems like a really thin something wrapped around the straps wouldn't interfere with the safety... Like a couple of baby wash clothes wrapped around it or something.

We have a graco snugride, did not come with strap covers. I didn't realize what a difference they make until we got a convertible that has them.
