We have/had a Graco Nautilis. In fact, when DS1 was 22 months old and 23 lbs, we were hit by another vehicle that was traveling 80+ miles an hour. He was riding in this exact seat and was the only one in the car that wasn't hurt. I immediately replaced the seat with an identical one. At age 6 (37 pounds and 43 inches), he still fits the 5-point harness. DS2 has a Graco convertible carseat (extend-to-fit). I agree that the only difference is that it has more recline options, and the extend-to-fit can be RF or FF.

Just a note that DS1 was FF at that age because I didn't know better at the time! The laws in my state only require RF until 12 months of age.

We put my daughter in a pt harnessed booster a bit past 3. She more than meet the minimums and we wanted a seat that would last.

We have our oldest still harnessed at age 5.5 She doesn't complain so we haven't said anything.

Yep everything above. I moved my 3.5yo into a combo frontier when little bro needed the convertible. She is still harnessed now at 5.

@bloved: just as safe as a forward facing convertible, so if he was forward facing already it is the exact same thing. A combination seat is not a booster it is a seat that can be used in harness mode or booster mode. It would be safe for any kid over 2 who you want to face forward.

@looch: that's me! I bought it and then panicked. I figured it was probably ok but just wanted the extra reassurance. My 4 year old is huge so definitely fits all limits and I was trying to make the safest, yet most cost effective, purchase possible.

@catgirl: perfect - that is what I need to hear. So even though he is not 4 yet, it still acts/is as safe as a convertible?

What @catgirl wrote.

I have noticed a lot of people don't understand what a combination seat is and think it's somehow less safe than a convertible seat that is forward facing. The main thing you need to look for to determine if your child is really ready for a combo seat is slump when sleeping in the car, as they don't have the same amount of recline as a convertible.

The nautilus is a combination seat which is perfect for your four year old (assuming within all limits). A combination seat used in harness mode is the same as a forward facing convertible seat. You won't be "using a booster" until you convert it from harness mode to booster mode.

For context I have a 1 yr old and an (almost) four year old.

So I realized yesterday that it was the last day to exchange your infant carrier at target for the 20% off a new car seat coupon. My 1 year old desperately needed out of that thing (he is over 26 lbs and his legs were hanging over. It was way to heavy to carry) so I thought the timing was perfect. I would get a car seat that turns into a booster for my older child, and give the baby our old convertible car seat.

Anyway, long story short, we accidentally bought the Graco 3 in 1 Nautilus because we thought it was a car seat/booster. However, it is just a booster (although one with 5 point harness). Would you return it and get something different (like the Graco Milestone) or you think the 5 point harness gives it equal safety/longer lifespan (the box says you can use it starting at 22 lbs so I am assuming it is supposed to be equal to a forward facing seat). The reviews online are great, I just don't want to compromise the safety of my older kid, especially since technically they are supposed to be in a car seat until 4 (no judgement for anyone using a booster before/at 4...in fact I am looking for reassurance from YOU if your kid is in one that it is okay because my husband thinks I am crazy!).
