@Andrea: alright, that's really good to know!
I feel like we need a second seat, I am thinking about getting another harness to booster model, especially for play dates and stuff.

@bisous: that's a great article, and I think buses are safe if there is a head on collision, but when you see school bus accidents in the news, they're either ones that rolled over or got hit from the side, which is where I feel buses just aren't safe enough without a belt.

@Andrea: I am curious about the field trip thing, what kind of buses are they?

Nope - I had asked my DCP about this last summer when DS was going on field trips on a school bus. At least in PA once you turn 4 years old you can ride a bus (no seat restraint)

I was sooo nervous he wouldn't sit still but the teacher said he did great!

At one point this came up often on the Car Seats for the Littles FB group. Apparently a car seat is not needed on a bus because of compartmentalization. That is something a bus does that a car does not...

Eta: Not super recent, but this article does a good job explaining it. I am pretty sure on CSFTL they said both school and charter buses compartmentalize. http://www.momlogic.com/2009/09/why_dont_children_have_to_buckle_up_on_the_school_bus.php

@MrsH: if there is a seat belt, then you could strap in a car seat.

@MrsH: I ride busses like that a lot to visit my parents upstate. I don't know that they have seatbelts, but I'm sure you could call to check. I've seen kids on them, and never seen them in a car seat.

Probably not on a public bus, but they ask us to bring car seats for school field trips on a bus.

Usually no. I've only seen seatbelts in buses in Europe.
