@kiddosc: Yeah, I was surprised I couldn't find a video of what you're looking for. I'm guessing that they've DONE the tests with securely (as much as possible) buckling the test dummy in with a winter coat, but they didn't film it, and it was only the Today show that filmed this video.

@Littlebit7: I agree - I think most people will probably get the gist even though the video isn't perfect.

I don't know that the purpose of these videos is to be precise in following the scientific method or anything. They are more "hey, maybe you might remember next time you are buckling your kid in that he or she shouldn't wear a puffy coat"
A ton of kids aren't even restrained properly, don't have seats installed correctly, forward face too soon, or buckle their kids in securely.
The general purpose of these videos aim to capture the attention of the masses, not appease the smaller percentage of people analyzing the setup of the situation. Maybe the execution wasn't 100% but this video (and others) has gone viral and changed behavior for a lot of people.

@kiddosc: YES! DH and I noticed this last year on the Today show video, its so blatantly obvious if you're paying attention.

@Adira: Thanks, that's closer to what I'm looking for... I really want to see the coat compressing though. I'm just really surprised that video doesn't exist.

@kiddosc: A puffy coat could compress in an accident, making it so the straps suddenly have a ton of slack instead of being firm against the child.

Here's a video showing no slack vs slack:

@Adira: But that doesn't demonstrate how the coat would behave in a crash, which is the information I'm interested in.

@kiddosc: This isn't a crash test dummy video, but it shows a real mom buckling her child in with a winter coat and getting it as tight as she can (and you can really see her putting her weight behind tightening the straps) and then she takes her kid out and takes the jacket off and you can see how super loose the straps are.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5AwtaQnNO8

I do agree, that in that Today video, it doesn't look like they even tried to get the dummy with the winter coat buckled correctly, but I think their point still holds.

@SteelerGirl: I feel like it hurts their cause because people will assume that it doesn't apply to their properly restrained child.

Those videos are hilarious! He even tugs on the straps to show they're snug, but does it super quickly because they clearly are NOT snug! It's pretty disappointing that they would set up scenarios like that for dramatic footage that just isn't realistic.

@Adira: Have you seen the video? They are clearly not restrained as good as they can be. For the dummy, the straps aren't even over the shoulders and the chest clip is at belly level. For the real child and the dummy, the straps would never pass the pinch test (though later in the video you do see a dummy with a coat on and properly arranged/tightened straps sitting on a table.) I have put my children in coats in their carseats to test out the coat and gotten snug straps on coats that would be inappropriate to wear in the seat... so I want to see that test. I want to see a properly secured child in a coat to know what the actual crash crash force difference is.

I get it that coats compress and they're not safe, I'm not trying to make that point. I just want to know what the actual differences are when the child looks to be properly secured, not in the clips dramatized for TV.

@kiddosc: I mean, I think the people doing the test are strapping in the kid as best as they can - it's just that they CAN'T secure them properly with the puffy coat. Hence why it's a problem.

@Adira: Yea, I understand it. But I'm interested to see the test with a properly restrained child in a puffy coat... which doesn't seem to exist. Or even a link to measured crash forces to show the effects of the extra slack.

ETA: I would suspect that there are a fair amount of people that don't believe the hype because the videos show children who are CLEARLY improperly restrained.

@kiddosc: I mean, this is something you can test yourself. Put your kid in their car seat with their puffy jacket and tighten the straps. Then take them out, take the jacket off, and put them back in the car seat and see how loose the straps are. If they aren't lose without the jacket, then you're probably fine.

The problem with puffy jackets in car seats is that they are filled with air. You might think the straps are tight, but once an accident occurs, the air deflates and suddenly there's a lot of empty space between your child and their straps.

Ok... I know you're not supposed to put a kid with a puffy coat on in the carseat and I understand the reasoning. But every crash test video they show to prove this point, the kid is barely strapped in. Sometimes the straps aren't even over the kid's shoulders and they're definitely never pulled tight enough to pass the pinch test. The Today show piece that I see circulated every year makes me twitchy because the reporter's kid and the crash test dummy are both strapped in ridiculously with enough room to fit your whole arm under the straps. Of course the dummy flew out! https://www.today.com/video/car-seat-alert-a-winter-coat-could-endanger-your-child-585502787887

Does anyone have links to a video with a kid strapped in tightly and what the crash test looks like?
