If you find that the AC doesn't circulate well to the back you can look into a noggle also. Then you don't have to freeze upfront just to keep LO comfortable in the back. http://www.nogglenation.com/

Thanks all. I guess it's kind of a "duh" thing (run the AC, etc) but I was just worried about it. The idea of putting a white towel/sheet over the carseat during the day (like when I'm at work) is a good one to keep it from getting so hot. Love the idea of a sunshade too, I will get that.

Window shades, crack the windows and blast the a/c. I also have a reflective cover that goes over her carseat that helps a little bit. It doesnt keep it totally cool, but every little bit helps.

I live in a part of So Cal that get very hot in the summer and I was worried about this, but it hasn't been a huge deal. We do not have covered parking, either. The cas seat doesn't get that hot, just the buckles, so I try to make sure those don't touch his skin. And like others have said, I roll down the windows and crank the A/C right away. I also tend to not drive at the hottest part of the day because that is also his nap time (1-3). So usually we go somewhere in the morning before it gets too bad or in the late afternoon once it has cooled off slightly (sometimes our summer nights can still be in the 90s).

It gets pretty hot here, but her carseat isn't leather, so that helps! And i keep a shade on the window. I start the car before i put her in and will crack a window and blow some air back there. It's hot, but she's not going to pass out from heat in the 5 minutes it takes to get some air back there, ya know? I usually start the car before i unload groceries, for example.

Actually the car seat didn't get that hot in our SUV. But we put up shades on the windows to block the sun, park in the carport, and use our remote start.

We lived in South Florida then moved to South Texas. I think the type of seat depends on how hot it will get. Ours doesn't get that hot. we just run the AC, not an issue.

LO was born in September, so we haven't tried this out yet, but I got the Mommy's Helper Car Seat Sunshade ($8)for the Texas heat:

You just cool it off the same way you do for yourself. When you get into a hot car with your child in a parking lot or outside, get them in then roll down the windows and crank the a/c. When the a/c starts moving, roll up the windows. Our infant seat was stained with sweat because our lo was a chronic sweater when she was a baby!!

I'm usually parked in a garage so it helps keep it cool, but if we are out shopping, ect. and the buckles are warm (never really had an issue with the car seat being hot to touch just the metal pieces) I run the A/C before putting her in.

I always run the air-conditioner prior to picking H up from daycare, so her seat isn't too warm at all. When she's in the car, I crack her window so she gets a breeze. At night or when we are home, I park in the garage so the sun isn't directly shining on the seat, and that helps to keep it cool.

Just like when it's cold, you can run the A/C to cool the car before putting baby in. You can also throw a white sheet over the carseat when you leave the car to help reflect some heat. And finally, I think most carseat materials don't trap heat the way leather car seats do--My LO's carseat has never been burning to the touch the way the passenger seat is.

So I am starting to think more concretely about baby stuff since I'm 10w along now. I live in south Florida and it's hot in cars year round, of course worse in the summer but even in the winter.

I started thinking, HOW on earth do people keep their car seats cool in the backseat, rear-facing, in really hot climates? I can't leave anything in my car because it just gets roasted/melts.

So, I know it's winter and cold out right now, but what are your tips/suggestion for keeping your car seat and your baby cool when your car is hot??
