@mamabolt: @Mrs. Yoyo: Thank you for this info on the marathon! My daughter is 95th percentile for height due to some long *ss legs, so this info is very helpful as we consider convertibles!

@autumnlove: sorry, didn't see this earlier.
I think by weight it's 40, but I really doubt that many kids make it to that weight without outgrowing by height first. My LO is just under 30 pounds.

@Mrs. Pen: I am happy to do it, the seat is at the family's house right now and they are out of town until Thursday so it will be later this week but it is not a problem. I have had both a Marathon and a Boulevard installed forward facing without an issue so I was surprised at how tricky the Frontier was.

@Cole: that would be awesome if its not a pain. $280 is a lot to dish out for a coarsest you know? And there is no BBB near us.

We have has car seats forward facing in our car though and we just used the latch system for behind the headrest and it fit just fine. I'm not sure how much the fit day differ coarsest to coarsest though.

@Mrs. Pen: Mine is an '09 so they should be pretty similar, I will say, I have not tried installing it forward facing yet though. My car has those built in head rests and they can be a pain to work with if a seat has a higher shell. I used to have a Britax Frontier (which has a similar shell) in there and it was extremely difficult to get a good install. If you want me to try installing it forward facing in my car I can try later this week and let you know how it goes.

@Cole: good to know! I've been looking for this exact info. We have an '08 ford fusion and I've been eyeing the radian as well. I like how compact it is. But LO will need to be rear facing at least another year.

This is an interesting discussion! Especially since I generally perceived 2 yo as the standard age to forward face. And every parent is different- someone in my family forward faces her son at 18 mos.

So those who said to buy a new seat- how long did you rear face?

Here in the UK it's really uncommon for parents to keep babies RF past a year (9 months in most cases actually). It's really hard to find a seat that will rear face over about a year. I'm torturing myself over whether to shell out or go with the norm here... Especially as we don't even have a car right now, so it would just be for very occasional use.

I would turn him around. Our LO is also tall, and only 10 months and her feet are already on the seat so I don't imagine she will be rear facing much longer.

@T.H.O.U.: Yeah, I think the one inch thing is just RF. When you turn them, I think they're OK as long as they're not outgrowing the top harness slot (but don't quote me on that - def. check the manual).

Are you going to flip her soon?

@Mrs. Yoyo: just curious because your other post got me thinking. Is the one inch from the top rule only for rear facing? Can they be taller than the shell forward facing?

We have a second grace my ride and she's at the same point in the shell.

It comes down to when I want to spend the $$$. If we don't do it now, we'll have a year, maybe a bit more, before LO No. 2 needs to use the Marathons. So either I buy a seat now like the Radian that can RF, then FF, then become a booster, or wait until next year and buy something like the Frontier -- no RF, but it has a FF harness until we're ready to use it as a booster.

Gah. So many expenses piling up at once!

For me, I would turn LO to forward-facing. If it were absolutely unsafe to have her doing so, then of course I'd get a new seat for her. But because she is still safe to be forward-facing, I would consider saving the $500.

@Grace: same here. I think the concern about extended rear facing can be a bit overblown. I've done my research and I'm quite comfortable turning mine around around two. I think that spending a bunch of money to keep a child rear facing past two is unneeded.

I drive a Ford Fusion and it fits either with the angle adjuster our with the passenger seat pulled forward so I would think you should be ok. Buy Buy Baby will let you try the seat in your car so you could try that if you have one nearby.

Personally, I'd just turn him around. I know back-facing is safer, but in this case I'm going with the mentality of "we were all forward facing and we survived".

@wheres_c: I'm looking at the Radian, too. The Marathon has been a great seat, but apparently as Britax has redesigned it they've been shrinking the shell. Which makes no sense since most kids outgrow seats by height, not weight.

I agree that I would give the new lo the marathon and buy a radian for your older lo.

I don't know. I would probably turn him when he hits the limit, but I know it's a hard decision when you know it's safer rear facing. The Diono Radian is really great for y'all kids and it doesn't cost $500-$600! You could put him in the Diono and then put LO2 in the Marathon whenever the time comes. That's actually our plan for us.
