Thank you all for the suggestions. I hadn't heard of the graco transition one. I'll be looking into that one more. It's nice to hear other moms actual reviews of things. I know the Diono ones are supposed to be exactly what I am looking for but it's a lot of money for me when I only will utilize the forward facing piece.

@bookwormmama: I have the hatchback. We definitely cannot fit our dog back there with both seats but I have them both outboard. I have a 2011, so it's bigger than the Versa Note. Once A turns 2, I'll turn her and get another Tranzitions as long as they still make them.

@avivoca: @catgirl: thank you both for your input! It looks like the Tranzitions is even on sale for $90 at BRU so I think we are going to go that route!

@avivoca: do you have the sedan or the hatchback? We have the sedan style. We are hoping to put my 3 yo in the middle and the bucket seat (Keyfit 30) behind the passenger seat so we can hopefully fit our dog in the third seat when needed.

We have the harmony defender, it's very narrow and a great price. Graco Tranzitions/ways is very similar but wasn't widely available when I bought our seat.

The most narrow combination seats are the graco tranzitions/wayz and the harmony defender. All around $100-$125.

@bookwormmama: definitely no point in getting a diono for an already forward facing child. You would be paying a lot and only using one function of the seat. Diono's don't make usable boosters for the vast majority of children. It makes way more sense to get a combination seat.

@bookwormmama: I also drive a Versa and have the MyRide for my seven-month-old and the three-year-old in the Tranzitions. There is a lot more space in the back! Install was a breeze and my daughter seems to like it a lot. It comes in black, light aqua, and a mauve color.

We have the Graco Tranzitions as well and I am really liking it. Our car is small so we can't fit a third person in the back but it's super nice. Plus it was $95 at Walmart.

@Baby Boy Mom: thank you for mentioning this car seat, I have never heard of it and the price is awesome! I'm now thinking about getting this one instead of the Radian. How is the install and do your kids like the seat?

We currently have a Nissan Versa and a Graco MyRide for my three year old. We are expecting DD next month. We will be buying a Diono Radian RXT for my three year old because it is way, way slimmer than our Graco. We want to have the third seat option if necessary. The Radian is thinner than any Britax or other car seat I looked at and can be used as a booster eventually. We haven't bought it used it yet because baby number 2 isn't due for another month, but it seems like it will work for us. I plan on putting DS in the middle and the bucket seat where his car seat currently is.

We created a baby registry at Target that offers a 15% completion disount. I also turned in a broken car seat for their car seat event and got a 20% off coupon for a new car seat. I think the 15% off will take the cost down to around $200 or less. They also have cheaper Radians, but I like the added comfort of the RXT, so we are going to pay a bit more for it.

I think the Car Seats for the Littles website has a list of very thin car seats you could look at as well.

We use a Diono to allow for extra space. They are very narrow. I will say they don't seem as comfortable as our britax and they are quite heavy but DS doesn't seem to mind.

Look for a Harness to Booster seat, also called a combination seat.

Graco makes great combination seats, I have the Nautilus in my car.

I need help. My DD just turned 4. Is about 41lbs. We want to get a new car seat that is narrower as we will be putting an infant seat in the back and still want a space for a person to buckle. I would prefer to keep her in a 5 point harness for a little while longer before going to a booster with the seat buckle. I also do not want to spend $200. Any recommendations of what worked well???
