Ds1 gets car sick, but he can actually see out the windows pretty well when he was rear facing. Turning him didn't really help if he could see out.

He can't watch or read in the car and I have to ask him questions about things out the window when he starts to complain.

He had also gotten really good at throwing up in to a bag.

Snacks help a bit, something like pretzels.

Stop and go traffic is the worse...

I've been meaning to come back and say what has worked really well for us so far (knock on wood) is to have the RF convertible carseat installed in the infant position rather than the more upright toddler position. I think that way he's looking more at objects outside the car through the windows and less at the seat. @psw27: was right, angle makes a big difference!

Thank you all, super helpful! We made it home yesterday without incident but ds got motion sick again today at the end of our flight and both dh and I got completely drenched.

@BUNBUN: thank you, getting those bags.

@psw27: definitely getting sea sickness bands, interesting about the seat. We never had an issue when ds was in his infant seat so maybe that has something to do with it.

@ALV91711: getting sea bands!

@Mrs. Champagne: yeah right now we have space. Our max speed going home clocked out at 15mph

@Mama Bird: train to subway is my backup option. They are both short rides but the main downside is we’d get there about 35 minutes before daycare opens and have to find somewhere to hang out. Still it beats him being miserable and me scrubbing puke every day!

Our oldest used to get car sick. 100% to no screens or books in the car. It also might be the seat that you have. When our son was in the Recaro Pro Ride he vomited all the time. We got him a NextFit Zip (to help with cleaning) and he never vomited again. It could be the angle of the seat. I would bring along ice water, keep the window down and try seabands.

@periwinklebee: for what it's worth, my kid never got motion sick on public transit. I think it was something about being strapped into a car seat, and having to sit by herself... so maybe public transit will help.

DS1 gets car sick, mostly on winding highways. Sea bands are the answer. You can get them on amazon. He did get sick with them on once recently hit Inthink it was a combination of things including having ice cream right before going on a winding highway.

I'm a puker, have been since childhood.
Temperature is key - we rolled down the windows a lot
Do not make them eat before driving (breakfast) if they fight it (boy, do my parents regret doing that over and over again)
Stop and go traffic is the worst. I cannot go on busses for long trips and cabs/ride shares are tough. I'm up front and honest if the driver is accelerating/breaking in a bad way - they want to protect their car!
no books, cards, screens in the car
teach them to close their eyes when they feel sick and go to sleep...if that helps. My friend's son gets sick as soon as he wakes up if he falls sleep in the car
Emesis bags are easy to have with you all the time and they rock for car sickness
My mom eventually got prescription car sickness medicine
It's really hard!

@Mrs. Champagne: Thank you! He's definitely on the young side to forward face, 16 months, though in the 99th percentile for his age so that helps. I might consider it for commuting to work since we never go over 25 mph - all residential streets ( :meh: average speed under 10 mph) - but would obviously prefer him to rear face if there's any way to keep him from puking.

@hellobeeboston: Interesting, as DS has been fine on highways/at more consistent speeds too. Normally the only time we'd drive is on weekends, longer distance with minimal traffic, and we only had one incident where he had a bunch of food right before getting in the car. Unfortunately where his daycare/my job are located is a true traffic nightmare, and all the way there from the place we bought is stop and go. I just hope we can make the commute tenable

Thank you all so much, this is super helpful. I hadn't thought of the temperature.... We were in a lyft today, as we're not yet off the parking spot wait list. I'm sure the driving was not great, thank goodness LO only puked on the car seat and not on the person's car. But I still felt really bad for the driver as well. I wonder if the bus public transit option would be even worse for motion sickness (besides taking forever); I'll experiment. Ugh :meh: not an ideal start to life in the suburbs. He's only sixteen months, so wasn't able to communicate that he wasn't feeling well. I'm going to order some puke bags to be ready, at least in an uber I can be watching him closely...

@bhbee: Moving while pregnant was definitely rough. But everything is moved to our new place, contractor is starting on some painting, etc on our old place to sell, and we'll get there. We're traveling much of the next week - unfortunately this morning's incident has me quite concerned DS will have a repeat of air sickness like last time we flew at Christmas. But anyways, I'm sure unpacking will happen eventually :silly:

Not sure if those bracelet things work? Sea bands or something.
FF might help - how old? Is it an option? We turned my daughter a bit earlier then we would have it she wasn’t car sick. My husband gets car sick and said riding backwards would kill him.

ugh, i'm sorry. my son gets carsick very easily, we've found the following works (although note, he's FF now, not RF):

- keep cool - window open if possible
- no eating in the car, don't eat too close to car ride
- no screens or books or anything to look at in car
- keep eyes closed if feeling sick with window open
- try to stick to main highways going straight, turns, swerves etc, just make things things worse

if we're doing long trips on the highway, my son can actually look at a screen and be OK, but ONLY if we're at a consistent speed going straight.... it got better when he was FF...

I get really carsick, too, when I'm not driving. As in, cannot look at my phone or do any reading, cannot look around a lot.

In stop and go traffic, gentle stops are really important. Like, REALLY important. The more jerky the stops are, the more likely I'm going to get sick (even if there are less starts/stops). Honestly not trying to criticize your driving, because you may have already thought of this. In my experience, most people don't realize how abrupt their braking is until it's called out.

DD1 went through a period of getting car sick a lot. So if we were to drive somewhere, we didn't give her breakfast before. Maybe you can send breakfast to day care instead of eating at home?

Also, for us, stop-and-go traffic was the big trigger, so I tried to drive as smoothly as possible... But of course that's not entirely in your control!

Good advice above - my oldest also can’t do anything in the car which is really annoying (no books, screens, drawing, etc). Maybe you could play something like Music Together type songs - a little entertainment but not too grating for adults.

We have a hard time getting cold air to the back seats - I only have a vent on the back of the center console even though we have a third row (and it’s super hot here). When she started sitting in the third row all the time we got a Noggle which looks totally ridiculous but it does work and you can rig it up to blow cold air on a RF seat if you don’t have vents.

Side note I hope the move is going well!!

DD gets car sick often. We've never been able to pinpoint anything specific bc it's been all over (long and short rides, full and empty stomach, tired and not tired, videos and no videos)... Anyway we do dramamine for kids for long trips like 3+ hrs but all other times we just travel with a bucket. She's 5 now so for the past yr or two she's been able to tell us shes getting sick...we stop if we can and get her out but sometimes that just delays it and she gets sick later.... Sometimes we can't stop and she pukes in hey bucket...not sure if your lo is old enough for that yet but it's a life saver

Good luck

How old is LO?

LO 1 gets carsick and we have found that reading books or playing on a tablet make her much more likely to get sick, so we don’t do either. We do a lot of audio books in the car.

She is less likely to get sick if she isn’t hot (we keep the backseat cold and have air blowing on her).

We also keep an empty container with a lid (old protein powder container) so if she needs to throw up it’s not all over the car seat.

Rapid acceleration and braking are also triggering, so we brake and accelerate as gently as possible.

I have bad motion sickness - ff helps. No books or screens in car, cold air - blast ac or open window if it’s cool out. Sometimes a full stomach is better then empty. There are meds that help but you have to do it like 1hr before you leave. Also for me stop and go or a jerky ride are the worst so try to drive “smoothly” if possible, like the opposite of my husband basically don’t slam on the breaks and accelerate hard

We had our first day driving into daycare today, rather than taking public transit (just moved and public transit is now much less convenient). It's a few miles in stop and go city traffic and takes 30-40 minutes. DS got super carsick at the end.

What can I do to reduce this? He's still rear facing, so impossible for him to really see objects outside the car, which I know is what they say helps. He got car sick after watching a 3 minute or so video (the only thing I gave him to look at on the ride). I can cut out videos but feel like it's hard to expect him to stay entertained without a book or anything, since he is rear facing so can't see out.... He ate breakfast over an hour before we left, and is not a big breakfast eater anyways, so I'm not sure what I can fix there... Just really hoping there is a way to prevent this...
