We did a trip to Florida from Canada (24 hours each way) when DD1 was almost 12 months. Yes she watched bubble guppies on repeat and ate McDonald's a few too many times, but it was way easier than I thought it would be. We had tons of snacks, a magna doodle, and a preloaded ipad.

We left in the morning about an hour after wake up. Drove through her nap, waited to stop for lunch until she had been awake for 45-60 minutes then spent an hour or so at lunch, then walking, playplace exercise time. Back in the car with some cartoons and then after an hour she'd be asleep again and we'd stop again for dinner. We'd do a longer stop at dinner and then drive until elevenish and transfer her to the travel crib in the hotel. Luckily she transfers well and never woke up.
We only had one melt down and it was on the south Carolina Georgia line when we couldn't find a place for dinner. Girl gets hangry.

Fun! My one year old did great.

We always tried to time it
30-45 minutes in the car eating a snack, having a glass of milk
2 hour nap (my kids always fell asleep if we times for nap time)
1 hour play time after nap
Stop

And then maybe an hour of driving and then another meal time. Sometimes we let them eat in the car because it gave him something to do while sitting there.

I'm trying to prepare for a road trip mid-May when E will be 12 months old. It's a 6 hour trip from here to my hometown but last time it took us 10 hours with all the stops. Please give me your best young toddler car travel pointers!

We will be on a tollway with plenty of rest stops. Last time we had multiple unscheduled (and time consuming) stops for bathroom breaks, baby feeding, and baby fussiness. Because of DH's disability I can't make him wait too long when he says he needs a bathroom break.

I am planning to start our trip around the time of E's morning nap, then stop for lunch about 2 hours later. I was thinking maybe we could go to a McDonalds with a playplace so E can get his energy out. I imagine he'll be walking a little by then and he's already a climbing, cruising maniac :silly:

After lunch I'm hoping we can get another long stretch of driving in, but I'm sure there will be pit stops needed. Should I let him out of the car as much as possible (when he' s not napping) so he doesn't get bored? Besides an iPad, what other toys can I take in the car (that won't end up thrown on the floor)? DH will sit in the back but he can't really hold a book with his one good hand. What else could he do? Puppet show? LOL!

Any tips for toddler-proofing a hotel room?

TIA!
