I read an article recently that said most of the popular flavored seltzers (lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, etc) are acidic and therefore not great for your teeth even though they aren't sweetened. I don't think a few sips here and there would hurt anything, but I've made it a point not to drink seltzer in front of DD even though I love it. I don't want her to get used to drinking it yet, though I probably won't fight it too hard when she's older.

We'd been giving my toddler lots of sips until a dentist friend mentioned the tooth enamel thing - she said that kids' enamel is a lot softer/more porous than adults' and that we should stop, so we don't really give it to him anymore.

@AnnabelleG: at age 2 as long as the drinks arent making him gassy it should be fine.
That's different from sweet soda drinks that are an issue because of the high sugar content and artificial colors and flavors

My 3.5 year old loves sparkling water and while he doesn't drink much at a time, I'm happy to give it to him. He doesn't drink anything else besides water or milk and I've always treated unflavored/unsweetened sparkling water just as I would regular water. We make ours at home for the most part.

I love all of the names people's LOs give to sparkling water! For my LO, he usually calls it "bubbly water" or "spicy water"!

My 2.5 year old likes La Croix a lot (although she calls it "mean water" because the first time she tried it, she got a bubble in her nose). I don't tend to buy it, but my mom keeps it around so she will have a little if someone opens a can when we are there. I don't think a little bit of unsweetened sparkling water will hurt her.

I don't see a problem with unsweetened carbonated water, but DS has never had it due to no one liking it.

@Iced Tea: My DS also likes iced tea and has since I had it. I drink unsweetened so I don't care how much he has. Interestingly, my MIL drinks tea with milk and sweetener and he doesn't like it although all the other grandkids did.

DH and I drink so much sparkling water - either plain or lemon-lime with no sweetener. LO started taking sips of our sparkling water around 3 and she loves it. She calls it soft drink or seltzer water. She drinks plenty of plain water too but I like that she's developed a taste for sparkling water rather than a taste for soda

I give my kids a little seltzer water (not sweetened) whenever they want it - which is usually once a day. They don't drink juice on a regular basis so even if there is something to the theory that it erodes enamel I think tit's ok.

My 17 month old is obsessed with "fizzy wawa" (seltzer) There isn't any sugar or artificial flavoring so as far as I know it's fine? (I think it's gross, so she only gets sips when my mom or husband is drinking it!)

I don't think it's a big deal, but my dentist "yelled" at me (in a nice way, of course) when he found out how much seltzer I drink. Apparently, carbonation erodes tooth enamel and should only be consumed in limited quantities. Even with that knowledge, my seltzer habits have not changed much :silly: my oldest likes to take sips of my "spicy water", but generally, she's not interested. If she was, I wouldn't hesitate to let her have some.

My 18 month LO likes seltzer. She also stole my iced tea and became obsessed with trying to get it. I drink it daily (hence my username, haha), so it has been a challenge. She asks for tea all the time and begs for it loudly in restaurants.

I'm impressed they'll drink it! Every time my toddler has a sip of anything carbonated he immediately sticks his tongue out, letting his mouthful pour down his shirt, and tells me he doesn't like it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with giving toddlers seltzer or sparkling water. My nephew was (is) obsessed with seltzer starting really early on and he's almost 4 now and no issues. In a really young child whose digestive system wasn't fully developed I'd say maybe not a good idea due to the gas but you don't even give super young kids plain water so...

My 2-year old has discovered my La Croix (flavored sparkling water). What do people know about carbonated water and little ones? Is there anything your LO has discovered you wish he/she hadn't?
