In addition to (or instead of) food, something that was super helpful when my dad passed was a gift bag full of paper plates and cups and plastic utensils.

SO MANY people thought to bring food, but only one group of friends thought to give disposables so that we didn't have to worry about any dishes.

I would make a basket with a couple of types of muffins (individually wrapped so they could be eaten or thrown in the freezer), coffee, tea and fresh fruit. I would make two chicken pot pies - one to eat and one to freeze - if you wanted to take dinner. I agree with @NurseMommy about sharing your memories too. I loved hearing stories about my family members in the wake of losing them.

When my dad died last year the things that meant the most to us were meals that we didn't have to think about - sending muffins, frozen casseroles, etc. The other thing that we loved was people sharing their good memories of dad. So since you say you loved him, maybe write a letter saying how much he meant to you and a couple of funny/sweet memories?

Yes, I'm definitely thinking some freezer meals. Maybe some muffins. Disposable things like plates and silverware and napkins, etc.

i am so sorry to hear this.

i have made simple baked ziti dishes before that the family can store in the freezer and heat up when necessary. any dish that is easy to freeze and reheat would probably be a big help.

I am crushed. My best friend just called to tell me that her father passed away unexpectedly. I absolutely loved her father and just can't believe it. Out of our small group of friend's her dad is the second of our parents to pass (my mom died last year) and it really just puts things into perspective, you know? :(

I want to cook something or make a care package for her and her mother. She lives in another city, but is on her way to our hometown and will probably be staying at their house, I'm sure.

What are some things I can include/bake/cook? I don't have much money for flowers or anything, so I figured I'd just DIY and assemble something for them. Suggestions?
