@Anagram: Once you set up the fundme account I would seriously look into local education foundations. Even give them a call and ask to set up a meeting with any philanthropists that have an interest in library media or reading.

I was just going to say what @blackbird pointed out. Its professional development and could be written off on your taxes.

I think it would be a great opportunity for you and your school, but only you could make that decision.

@Thehistoryofus: yup, I did that at the beginning. I attached all the information about the committee, the amounts of books I'll get with the estimated cost, the requirements, etc.

1st year: (500-600 books, 250-300 titles) = $5,000-$6,00@$10/book
2nd year: (1250-1500 books, 250-300 titles) = $12,500-$15,000
3rd year: (750-900 books, 250-300 titles) = $7500-$9000

I'm typing out a gofundme.com page, but I feel a little uncomfortable sending this to all my friends and asking for donations....

Have you thought about offering to put together a proposal page that he could bring to the superintendent? Also, what about going to any local education foundations. Most of them would jump at the opportunity to invest $1,000 and know the school was getting $5,000 in return.

I think this is a great resume builder. I would try to do it at all costs.

These are the times when I get down about working in education! Even when you're trying to excel in your job, you get shot down. Argghghghhhhh. What corporate company wouldn't pay $300-$600 (at least) to get $5,000 of free stuff they already need?

I have to remind myself that generally, I love my job. 95% of the time.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Sadly, I have not-so-great news. I talked to my principal again and:

- I can't appeal to the PTA (as I suspected, they won't finance a Professional Development trip, even if it helps the library get tons of books directly).
-He doesn't think he can even pay the registration fee now, which would mean I would have to pay $1000 out of pocket. Not possible
-He can't guarantee anything for the next two years.

He *did* say he was going to try the superintendent one more time to see if he would find the money to pay the registration, and he said he would let me know later tonight. But it's not looking good for me.

(sad face)

Congrats! I think it would be great to go, even if you had to pay -- I only say that because it seems like you dh is supportive of that option. It would be great if the PTA etc could get on board and support this somehow, too! Perhaps at least let the need be known? There could be some (well off) and generous patrons who might really support literacy in your school:) it at least we can hope:) congrats for being chosen again!

If you don't have to spend your budget on books for the next 2 years does that cover the cost of the future trips? 15k worth of books is quite significant, and it's not the school who benefits, it's the kids (and not just over the next 2 years, but years and years from now) I think it would be terribly shortsighted to miss out on this opportunity. Also I agree with pp about claiming it on your taxes and/or approaching the PTA about a fundraiser.

congratulations on getting accepted! it's terrible that you'll have to go into your own pocket... i think a fundraiser, if you were upfront about what the money goes to (getting you there) would be good for this year, and then next year you'll have a long time to submit your request and and have them cover it. and yes, you can write it off, which should help.

I would suggest a fundraiser, but the rules for those have really tightened up in my state. Since it's for me to go to a conference in another state, I feel like it won't be eligible for a fundraiser. Like....this money isn't for me to buy books for the library, it's for my personal flight and hotel arrangements, you know? SO to collect money from parents (in some form or fashion, even through a fundraiser) and then turn around and buy myself a flight and hotel...lol...it just seems wrong to me.

Plus, the conference is in April! Why would they wait so long to choose the committee replacements!?! Especially knowing how slowly school districts move. The organization has some scholarships, but the deadlines for those are long-gone.

And covering for this year, with the hopes that my school will pay for the future years....I'm just afraid that next year, they won't "have the money" either and I'll have already accepted the position. Plus, next year, I'll have a LO and I'll be breastfeeding, making me want to spend my own $$ to do this even less.

And I know my school will never guarantee that it will be in their budget next year. Blah. I think I'm just in a Debbie Downer mood. I have to pay for the conference registration by March 7th, so they sure didn't give me a lot of time to organize anything regarding $$

I'm annoyed for you! I think it's terrible how librarians and teachers end up having to spend their own money to do their jobs when their salaries are not high enough to begin with. But if it were me, I'd probably suck it up at least for this year, and then fight fight fight to get it covered in future years.

What would you all do?

I'm a librarian. Back in September, a librarian mentor told me about a book committee she was resigning from, and there was someone from my area that was also resigning. She told me I should apply and that she would put in a good word for me with the committee chair.

This committee would be great for my school, because it's a 3 year appointment, and publishers send me $5000 worth of free books per year (the committee has to make an annotated list of "best YA book picks"), which is $15,000 books total. I have a tiny book budget at my school, so we could really use this. It's extra work for me, but it's the kind of work I like doing.

BUT to be on the committee, I am required to go to the conference each year, which might be anywhere in the U.S. This year, it's in the south (I live in NYC suburbs).

Back in September, my principal was really excited about it and said he would pay for the conference each year if I got on the committee. The deadline to apply was back in September, so I applied...and heard nothing until this past Friday (february).

I got accepted onto the committee.....awesome, right?!

NO, because my school district is tiny and the budget is already finished for the year ( we had to turn in all purchase orders by Feb 1st). My principal told me today he could only pay for registration, and I would have to cover the hotel, flight, taxi, food, etc. That would be about $700 out of my pocket plus food.

So I told him I would not accept the position, as we have a baby on the way and I don't want to pay that much out of pocket. But now my husband thinks I should go and he's saying HE'LL pay for me to go. I'm torn. On the one hand, I'd love to go and it's great for me resume. On the other hand, I'm not willing to pony up $700 a year for 3 years, AND do all this extra work, to get my school $15,000 in brand new books from publishers when they aren't supporting me more, you know?

What would you do??
