No idea about ESL but I also was an adjunct for a brief time and also was paid basically nothing. I have a PhD and was working at an extremely well-known research university. I didn't make enough to cover my rent while I was an adjunct (luckily DH's salary was enough for us at the time).

@babypugs: ugh that's terrible. What is with the terrible treatment of adjuncts?! And yeah, no way am I getting another degree for an extra $500 :/ this expensive useless law degree is enough for me, thankyouverymuch ;)

@pinkcupcake: Can confirm that being an adjunct stinks! I've taught classes on top of my regular job at a large research university. I think I took home about $500 after taxes for each class. Once I had kids it was soooo not worth the time, no matter how much I enjoyed it. I'm not sure I'd go back to get another degree specifically to be an adjunct unless you don't care much about the money.

Thanks for the insight, everyone. Yeah, I've heard the adjunct field is terrible :/ Just trying to weigh my options and see what I could do to earn some $ with flexibility as my #1 goal

@yoursilverlining: do you know if she had to get any certification for that position? TESOL, etc?

Does she have to find her own students? @Eko:

@pinkcupcake: @starchild: Thats similar to what I have heard about the adjunct field here. We have 2 universities and a large community college. I think I heard like $2k per course in person.

We have a friend who teaches ESL online – it’s not college level, but if you don’t need to make like a real FT salary her gig sounds pretty darn ideal. She has great flexibility in her hours and can work from anywhere as long as there is internet. Of course you don’t get the in person experience.

My husband is a professor and PP are definitely right about the pay and treatment of adjuncts. It’s shameful how much work is expected and how little they are paid (not that public university professor salaries are much better!). But adjusts are like insane levels of pay at many schools. With many colleges and universities moving from tenure track as the norm to simply hiring more adjuncts and restricting any movement from adjunct into tenure-track, the market is pretty nasty right now and a lot of professionals who would have found tenured work can’t; so you could be competing against them as well for a position. That said, if you don’t need this to be real high FT-type income and you have a passion, I’d say go for it!

I teach as an adjunct and I do it because I love to teach. At the university where I teach andjunct pay has not increased in almost 20 years. I left my full time teaching job when LO was born and I basically have a few adjunct gigs that contribute to our vacation and home remodel savings. It's been great, LO has enjoyed time with my mom a couple mornings per week, but I'm actually cutting back my schedule for fall because it's a lot of work for not a lot of pay.

My husband is a professor and I believe PP is correct that adjunct professors make very little money. He always tells me they do it because they love it not for the money. Most have other full-time jobs and just teach classes as adjuncts on the side (or at least the ones at his school do it this way). Or they can't get tenure-track positions so take multiple adjunct positions at different schools.

@starchild: 😱😱😱 That is insanity! I'm assuming it was 1 hour, 5 days a week? If so that's not even $30/hour and you can't take another job for at least a half hour before and after so that you can commute in, so basically $15/hour for the 2 hours you spend on this job! Crazy!!!

The academic job market is competitive because the tenure track market is so small so a lot of PhDs and ABDs need these jobs to make ends meet and as first steps. Also, while it varies a lot, the one junior college I got an offer at expected me to teach in person 5 days a week for an 8 week summer course for $1100 total. And you're subject to a new schedule and whether or not the course will be offered or if you'll be asked to teach the next semester, so it is very unstable. You would need to have multiple classes per semester guaranteed to cover the cost of daycare if that's a consideration.

Any college level ESL instructors here?

Keeping this short because my baby is crawling over me, but my background is as an attorney. I'm currently a SAHM but would love to get back to working in a flexible teaching enivironment. Ideal job would be adjunct at a local CC. I don't have much teaching experience so not sure how to go about it. Was considering applying to be an ESL instructor at our local CC - they require TESOL certificates which don't seem too time extensive to earn?

Any instructors here who can give me any insight? Would love thoughts on job prospectives, how tough it is to find a job, time commitment, etc. thanks so much!
