A lot of schools are laying off their media specialists, and there is a lot of competition for those jobs because of the summer hours. Most states also require you to get your teaching license and student teach. Have you considered any other types of librarianship? It really is a fun field, and there are lots of interesting areas that you could specialize in. I'm a technical writer of sorts (not in IT), but the other flexible job options in writing are even less secure- it feels like being a freelancer offers even less job security! And that makes me sad. If I had acted on my initial impulse to go to library school when I first felt it 10 years ago, I'd be in a different position. But I took a different path, and I'm glad for it (it helped me to meet the Mr, after all!). My job as a teacher....sometimes I question it because of how much work I take home. I would just do some research in your area. In our area in EO most school libraries are run by a classified, not a licensed staff member. No lie, I do about 1.5 hours each way. I know that this is not sustainable, especially when we've got a baby or LO. Even if I wanted to keep that up, I would HATE to miss so much of my kid's early years!</p> <p>I've always wanted to work as a librarian, and honestly, working as a school librarian would probably be pretty convenient- the Mr. is a teacher, so we'd have summers off together, I love libraries, and I also like teaching, and young people. But it would involve going back to grad school and getting a Master's (a second MA for me, as I've already got one!). </p> <p>The library school in my state has a completely online program for school librarianship- how realistic would it be to have small LOs at home and do an online grad program at the same time? I know for a fact that doing my current 12-hour days would make my home life kind of hellish for all of us, but would it be possible to do something like that? </p>
