I went into this whole process initially thinking I would just use it as a bargaining tool to get a higher salary from my current employer (at best) but then after speaking with everyone during my interviews and learning more about the company and industry - I had a change of heart. My current employer even matched their offer, but as hard as it was I declined. My heart said to stay (due to loyalty, familiarity) but my head said to go (due to more room for professional advancement).</p> <p>So, I will be accepting the new position and working myself silly in the coming weeks to finish up my open projects and help in the recruitment and training process for my replacement. There aren't limitations for a company title, but the title assumed by the employee under the accrediting body is strict about degree requirements. Like, must be earned in one of three hard science concentrations to oversee a laboratory doing our kind of analytical work. And even though I'm in environmental science, and the open position is in food science - the same agency oversees both.</p> <p>I think I'll just send a short response conveying my interest and asking what the next steps in the process are.</p> <p>@Bookish: Any sort of promotion from my current position or possible promotion from the open position would definitely require the new degree. I didn't even think I was qualified for my current job based on the requirements but my bosses liked me and had enough confidence in me that they re-wrote the job descriptions so that I would qualify. I honestly didn't think I would have my current job for another 10 years - but two years ago, it just kind of landed in my lap! I think most people assume that if you list a school on your résumé, that you graduated from there. It sounds like for you, that someone cannot automatically assume that you have that specific degree. Is that right? Anyway I don't think I would outright ask "are you sure I am qualified" because it does sound like you are selling yourself short. I would put it a different way, like "I understand that I would need to obtain this degree for this position, would that be something that your company would be supportive in me obtaining?" Or something like that. </p>
