The carpet in our house is the bane of our existance. We hate it. We are slowly replacing it with hardwood or tile. When we did DS' room, we put down bamboo hardwood and got a big rug for the middle of the room. I had asthma as a child and couldn't sleep in a room with carpet, so maybe that's why I don't like it in bedrooms!

I don't mind carpet in bedrooms, especially childrens' rooms. We only have it in the nursery and the spare bedroom and find its been perfect for the way our son lives and plays in his room.

I have a near-irrational hatred of carpets, so for me, carpeted bedrooms would be a deal-breaker (and was when we were house hunting last summer). I know a lot of people who prefer carpet in the bedrooms, however, so I don't think worry about damaging your chances of selling in five years should affect your decision at this point. Like Shellio said, I don't think it will make enough difference not to pick what will make you happiest.

Like many others have said, I prefer hardwood (or laminate) with area rugs for bedrooms or anywhere else where you would otherwise consider carpet. However,if you're going to have carpet anywhere, I think the bedroom is the best place for it.

Unless your LO has allergies, carpet masks sounds so much better. My youngest now naps a lot less than his big brother b/c we have gigantic tiles throughout the house. I woke him up yesterday when I opened a bag of chips. Just when I was going to sit down and eat some chips he woke up.

my entire house has polished hardwood floors, but last year we decided to install carpet in 3 of the 4 bedrooms (one is a study). best decision ever. so much comfier, warmer and cosier in winter. they are a dark greyish-beige colour and I'm sure they will get dirty in the future and need cleaning/replacing but I think its worth it.

i'm not a fan of carpet. aesthetically, i could get over a neutral colored carpet in a bedroom (new, carpet someone else had lived with would freak me out), but from a health prospective, i could not. carpets are trap dirt & allergens, they are full of VOCs, especially stain proof types. there may be some better alternative carpets being made now that i'm not familiar with, but i'd imagine they'd be expensive and if new owners are coming in a few years, they'd probably just rip them out and want to put their own new carpet in. but from the sounds of it, most people wouldn't be against buying a home with carpeted bedrooms, so if that would be your preference for while you're there, go for it!

@Greentea: wow! every other day? do you want to move in? Or lend me some of your motivation? Aye, I won't even mention how often we wash our floors and we have 4 fur creatures as well. I suppose that will change when LO is mobile. For now we just have blankets for each area to put down for her. She scooted off one today and ended up with a face full of fur! I'm pretty sure I will be fired as a mother if my 5 mo old gets a hairball...

I personally don't like carpet anywhere but in the bedrooms there are plenty of people who love it/don't mind it. If you are going to enjoy it yourself for the next few years, definitely go for it. I would say that since you have to get flooring anyway, putting in hardwoods that you don't enjoy (and possibly the cost of getting rugs too) would not add enough value to your house in 5 years that it would be worth it given your preference to have carpeting in the meantime. If that makes sense.

@catomd00: It's crappy parquet... It needs to go! Our floors upstairs have a lot of squeaking, so DH is going to do some major damage control to fix that issue, which requires the wood being ripped up anyway.

I love having carpet in the bedrooms, wood in the main rooms. I vacuum and mop the wood floors every other day, and just have to vacuum the bedrooms. I think it is good for kids. It stays pretty clean and is comfy and I "wash" it regularly with baking soda and vinegar - it isn't actually that hard, or you can always purchase a cleaner or hire someone. It works.

My only other option would be wood everywhere and then maybe flor carpet tiles or pure wool rugs in the kid's rooms. I like not having to deal with rugs though!

I prefer the look of hardwood throughout, but I absolutely hate washing hardwood floors! Vacuuming carpet is so much easier. That being said, I don't think carpet in bedrooms is going to be an all out deal breaker for selling, especially if you keep it in good shape. How crappy is the wood in the bedrooms right now? You could carpet over it, that way if someone really wants hardwood, it's underneath and they can have it re-finished?!

The only place in our house with carpet is the bedrooms. A few years ago we needed to decide to either refinish the hardwood in the bedrooms or replace the carpet for the bedrooms. We both decided we liked the warmth & coziness of carpet in the bedrooms.

I like hardwoods aesthetically, but for kid's rooms, I prefer the warmth of carpet. We are in the process of buying a house that has carpet upstairs and hardwood throughout the downstairs (including the master). I wanted hardwood in common spaces and didn't have a preference in the other rooms that would sway me between houses.

I like the idea of carpet in the bedroom, but I think unless we kept all our animals (2 dogs and 2 cats) and children out of the bedroom we will never have carpet again. Vomit cleaning goes from yuck to kill me now when it's on carpet instead of wood! I'd rather toss a rug that was beyond repair than deal with carpet issues. We had this come up yesterday even though only the dogs sleep in our room (cats are kicked out - they also can never be anywhere with carpet due to peeing issues, that is a whole other level of hell!) because one dog got sick after her vaccines and deworming :(

Our first townhouse had no carpet at all and I loved the idea of it when we bought it. But after not too terribly long, I kinda wished we had some carpet. Maybe it's all the animals we have (2 cats and a dog at the time), but we could never keep it clean, day after cleaning all the floors and it looked dirty again. Not really an issue with carpet.

I think hard wood is prefered in most living areas, but the bedrooms are definitely a place where plenty of people would prefer carpet.
