@Mommy Finger: I was looking at HD - which one did you get?

@LBee: Agree that it's not as welcoming for play - but our basement is essentially his man cave (where he will be spending time with baby while I'm at work since he'll be a SAHD). So it's almost like I have no say, but I do :silly: I would rather have no carpet because of spills and dirt and etc, not just from kids but from people in general!

@Kaohinani: I'll have to take a look at that!

@avivoca: Never thought of radiant floor heating. Hmm, I'll look into that too!

Definitely no carpet! We just redid our basement and put in some fancy vinyl from HD that we love. Looks like hardwood, is waterproof, and comes with a lifetime warranty. My contractor loves it and said it is a dream to install and what he put in his home. We just got some rugs to warm the place up and absorb the sound.

@Mrs. Oreo: Remind him that soon a baby will spit up all over said floor and then have a blow out while sitting on it. Not speaking from experience or anything

In all seriousness, we just replaced some of our carpet with the hardwood tile stuff and I will say it's less welcoming for playing on the floor, etc. But carpet gets disgusting with the small people. We ended up just getting some basic carpet from Home Depot with the assumption that once the kids are older we will replace it with hardwoods or something nicer. My criteria was: non shedding, soft, and a neutral color. It's not my favorite, but I also didn't cry when my son spilled spaghetti on the floor or when my daughter decided to decorate the carpet with a marker.

@Mrs. Oreo: We shopped around and then went with Floors & Decor. We had found a particular tile at one store but I was able to find it online at F&D. I called the nearest store and they had it, in bulk, at 40% off and THEN we used my husband's Contractor's discount for an additional percentage off! Since then, if we do not use HD, or Lowes for small projects, we use F&D. I'm certain the price point would help sway DH. 😉

@Mrs. Oreo: If anything, get some area rugs and maybe put in some radiant floor heating or something similar. .

@gotkimchi: @avivoca: @lilyofthewest: good point! DH is hell-bent on carpet again, so I'm gonna have to see what I can do do dissuade him. Thanks!

Tile. :) we have some that looks like wood flooring. You might also consider some in floor heating with it...makes the basement less basementy.

@Mrs. Oreo: I agree with @gotkimchi, you may want to look at other flooring options. My office had carpet in the basement and it flooded TWICE within a couple of years (they replaced with carpet again the first time). After the second flood, they replaced it with vinyl tile that won't be ruined in the event of another flood.

Are you sure you want to do carpet again? Vinyl or laminate is similarly price and might deal with the water better if something happens again.

Our finished basement got flooded and we had to remove ~1000sq fr of carpet. We’ve only had one estimate so far of $6000 with installation, but that seemed super extreme to me. Granted, we were guesstimating the type of carpet we had previously because it’s no longer being made according to the manufacturer.

Can anyone recommend the type of carpet they have in their finished basement so we can look at other options? Thanks!!!
