Another fan of the Scenera here. We bought it for our trip to India in November. It's lightweight and worked great. My husband toted it over his shoulder in the airports and didn't seem to mind too much. It's better than the heavier seats!

@smocks: @bunnylove08: I haven't done this, but have heard very bad things about car rental car seats! Maybe others can weigh in.

@smocks: do the car seat rental early because they might run out.

@bunnylove08: I didn't know you could do that! That's a way better option. I think we'll probably rent a seat with the rental car.

I've flown solo a few times and will be again next month. I check the car seat and use a carrier. This time I'm going to use a stroller and gate check that.

Having them on your lap isn't too bad, especially if it's not too long of a flight.

Do you need the car seat at your destination? If you do, I'd consider getting something like the Scenera and ordering it ahead, so it is there at your destination (assuming you are visiting family or friends?) rather than bring it through the airport/gate checking if you're going to have a lap child.

We traveled with our 16 month old from NYC to Orlando. My husband was with me. We took a stroller and car seat and gate checked both. If i could do a redo, I would just take a stroller and do a car rental with a car seat.

might be worth trying one of these straps to attach to your luggage, it's cheap <$15

@smocks: The car seat height limits can be misleading as some kids carry their height in their legs, and some in their torso. It's best to see how it is with them in the seat. Then you can check where their head is in relation to the top of the car seat.

@Weagle: Good point. I'll have to check her height. She has her 12 month appt in 2 weeks. She's a tall one...

@Mamaof2: That makes sense. Not sure if we got the belly bar with our stroller, I'll have to double check.

@smocks: If she's already surpassed height limits (head is 1 inch from the top of the car seat shell - most 13 month olds have surpassed that) then she shouldn't be using the B-Safe. If she isn't and you can use the B-Safe, a base is not required to install an infant seat.

@Mamaof2: What stroller do you have that you could put a convertible car seat on it? That'd be a decent option too, thanks.

That's a great concept @Weagle, thanks for posting it. Kinda pricey for one trip though, we generally don't fly too often. I'm wondering, she's like 20 lbs right now and the weight limit on her Britax B-Safe is 30 lbs, I doubt she's going to gain that much before then. Maybe I'll just try to bring that + my stroller + base. Ugh.

I actually bought a Cosco Scenera JUST for traveling - its super light weight and costs $35!

I put that in the stroller and then put my diaper bag and purse on top. I wore DS in my Beco. That way I had 2 hands to push the stroller - worked out really well!!

At the gate I asked if there were any empty seats and I lucked out on 3 of the 4 flights getting him a free seat. On the flight they didn't have one I checked the car seat and stroller at the gate

You could use a GoGo Baby (the name is similar to that) through the airport and then gate check it (with a cover) if you don't want to buy her a seat.

I will be doing a little air travel with my (will be) 13 month old by myself (unfortunately DH can't come) in March. We are flying from MI to AZ, unfortunately not on direct flights. How the heck do you bring a carseat along? We have a Britax Marathon, which is not a tiny little seat. Would I check it and have her as a lap child on the flight? Anyone have experience with this? I'm getting nervous that I just made a huge mistake booking this trip...
