We used the Chicco infant seat until he was 11 months, he was almost too tall, but still had plenty of weight to go.

We went to the Graco My Ride 65, and is doing great in it. I REALLY miss the portability of the infant seat, if he falls asleep he doesn't transfer well, so I usually just park or read a book until he has napped enough.

I would definitely get a infant seat and convertible later. DD is 8.5 months and still has lots of room so I think we can use it to 1 year. It's so convenient to put the infant seat in stroller and let baby sleep. Plus you're definitely not going to want to wake them up :)

The convenience of using an infant car seat is huge for me bc it means that I can take him anywhere to run errands in the mornings after we drop his older brother off at school bc it's usually nap time then. So I just snap him in the stroller in his car seat and go about my business. The downside is that at nine months he is heavy. But in a couple of months I will be moving him into a convertible (Diono bc then I won't have to get a booster later) just liked did with his older brother.

@MrsTiz: If you drive a normal amount (i.e. don't live in a super walking-friendly city) the infant carseat with a base + a stroller frame is invaluable!

I agree with pp. infant seats (we have Chicco key fit) shield from nosy people, let the baby sleep, and you can tote the little only places when they aren't sitting upright yet. I can't imagine not having an infant carrier, but that's just me! We have a britax marathon waiting for when he outgrows the carrier and it seats from 5-70 lbs and rear/forward faces but like pp, you would have to take an infant out of the carseat to run into th store or a quick errand...which I think would be incredibly inconvenient.

We have an infant seat now and will switch to a convertible once LO has outgrown it. Although she never really stayed asleep in it (after we'd lug it up the stairs she'd wake up) I like being able to take it out and snap it into a stroller. Also we have bases in mine, DH, and my mom's cars since there are times one of us drops her off and another picks her up from daycare.

The other benefit to a removable infant bucket seat is you can have one and move it easily back and forth between bases in multiple cars. This is great for us since DH drops off LO and I pick up. Once she moves into the convertible seat we'll have to have two carseats.

We use an infant seat now which I like because it kinds of shields her away from people so they're a little less likely to put their hands all over her and we got a cover for it so we can just close the flap when we want to protect her from the cold and wind. It's nice because it gives us a safe place to set her when we're out and about too. Like if we're out to eat we don't have to hold her the entire time even though she's too little for a high chair. We just put her in the carseat and she sleeps or plays.

So the only issue with using a convertible from the get-go is that you would have to take the baby out of the carseat completely whereas an infant one comes out of the car?

I ask because the carseat I like is a regular one but it says it can be used for NB too, so I was just making sure! Thank you!

We used a Chicco infant seat for the first 7 months. It came with one base and we bought an extra one for our other car. The carrier pops in the base and you can also use the carrier with a stroller frame for infant seats.

We switched LO to a convertible car seat at 7 months!

Some people just use a convertible car seat from the beginning!

There are some options. You can start off with an infant seat and then move on to a convertible car seat once LO gets older. That's the route we took. Or they also have convertible seats that have infant inserts. I prefer having a separate infant seat because it can easily be detached from the base and removed from the car. You can move a sleeping baby from the car to the house or store. Infant seats also fit travel systems.

You can do either. We started with an infant seat that we could just lift into a stroller base, or carry inside (really helpful when he falls asleep in the car and we don't want to wake him--we'll let him nap in there for a while). When he gets too long for it we'll get a convertible seat.

ETA: Check out Lucie's List. She has a great baby gear breakdown.

You can do either! Either get an infant seat and then a convertible seat later, or just get a convertible seat from the beginning and use an infant insert. The convertible seat does not snap into strollers and is generally heavy and hard to carry around, just FYI, so it's not very portable.

I know absolutely nothing about car seats, nothing.

So my question is, (don't laugh) do you have a separate car seat for a newborn and then one for when they are a little bigger until toddler years? Or do you get one car seat and put a newborn thing in it?

I'm looking into baby gear, and this just doesn't make sense to me haha

Feel free to post links to your car seat so I can get ideas :)
