@autumnlove: Oh how long before the trip did you switch? And how long did it take your baby to adjust to the new seat? I'm wondering if I start using the new seat now she may get used to it after month of use?

@glimmersnaps: oh I wasnt aware of that 1 inch rule? thanks for that
@purrpletulips: Yeah I was just about to post and ask about the recline in convertible seats. thanks for mentioning that

I'd get the convertible. Ours also reclined a lot when it was rear-facing. Also remember that the baby's head should not be closer than one inch to the top of the seat. I was told by a car seat specialist at the DOT that usually babies grow out of their seat before they actually weigh out.

Our convertible laid reclined almost to the same level as the infant carrier when rear facing so if your does that then I would say switch her; however you lose the convenience of having the infant seat to contain her when making stops (i.e. somewhere to put her when you are at a rest stop).

I would stick with the infant seat until after the trip. We switched right before our first road trip and LO was miserable. Her head flopped a lot during the drive and there were a lot of tears!

Ok thanks everyone that makes sense to try the convertible for a while first..

If you can let her get used to the convertible seat before the trip, I say go with that. We just used a convertible seat for several 4-5 hour trips with LO at 4.5-5 months. She looked so comfy, but it was kind of hard for her to figure out how to sleep in it at first.

If she's still comfortable in the infant seat, I'd say keep her there. At 7 months Wagon Jr. hated being inclined so far backwards but if she's fine, I'd say leave her in it!

We transitioned Liv around 7 or 8 months. She was light, but super tall. What I would do is get your convertible seat now and test it out for a few weeks. I wouldnt make her first trip in it your long distance one. She might not react well. So try it out, and if she reacts ok, use it. Liv liked sititng up more than reclining. She HATED the infant seat.

We took DS on a four hour drive when we was 6 months and we used his convertible car seat. But he was also 18.5 lbs. Since she is still small and that is such a long drive I would keep her in the infant seat.

Ooops I think I voted wrong. I would keep her in the infant seat. She is used to it, it will let her sleep better, and for small babies they can be safer. @Goldilocks1107: This is what we did too. We used both the infant and the convertible for a while. It wasn't until around 8-9 months though that I think she was really comfortable sitting up in the convertible.

My LO is 5 months old and I have a convertible car seat on the way. Since you'll need one anyway, maybe get one now and see how she likes it? I'm assuming in a month she'll be even taller and the infant car seat could be a bit of a squeeze.
I'm planning to put the convertible seat in my car and continue using the infant car seat in DH's vehicle to spread out the cost of 2 new car seats. It's just getting too heavy for me to feel safe carrying her plus the car seat around.

we are planning a road trip next month and our LO will be 7 months at the time. she is currently still using her infant carseat (graco snugride) she only weighs about 15lbs although she is tall. I'm not sure if we should make the trip in this carseat or if she will be more comfortable in a convertible car seat. The convertible will force her to sit more upright so I'm not sure if she will like that for the whole 12 hour drive. What would you do?
